I'm constantly finding stories of women who conceive naturally at older ages.  Many women over 40 and over 45 think they're too old to get pregnant and they forget about their birth control.  Here is a story of a women who had a surprise pregnancy at the age of 47 and a Baby at 48!  Imagine her surprise not only because of her age, but because she already has a 28 year old child (and her husband who is 56 has a 36 year old).
Well, it just goes to show you that babies come when they're good and ready.
from the article:

New mom Robin said she realizes that when she's 60, Noah will be 12. She says to that fact, "But with

the way our children are with him, I know he's going to be loved and cared for no matter what happens to us." New dad Mark recalls his thoughts upon finding out that his wife was pregnant, "When she told me she was pregnant, I said, 'Unbelievable. It's gotta be a mistake, you gotta go to the doctor.' My concern was that they were healthy. When the doctor said that, I was excited about it."
Being a dad at this age will help keep him young, he said. Teaching Noah how to throw a baseball and other sports, "I'm sure gonna try" he said.
Having lost a daughter when she was 18 in a car accident, Mark said "Maybe this is God's way of repaying me."

How Iron Helps You Get Pregnant

Iron may be just what you need if you are trying to conceive.  First, women may be losing iron through their monthly periods (especially if you have heavy bleeding).  Second, if you do become pregnant, your body may become deficient as the baby will take quite a bit of iron from your body.

Additionally,  iron may actually make you more fertile.  Women who take iron supplements have fewer ovulatory disorders.  Research has shown that women who took more than 41 mg of iron daily had a 62% lower chance of having a problem with ovulation.  Other sources of iron are non-heme iron which is found in plants.  Non heme iron is harder to absorb, but both are important because heme iron may help the absorption of non-heme iron.  Foods high in vitamin C can also help get the iron into your system.
    Foods rich in heme iron:
  • Scallops
  • Shrimp
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Eggs
  • Lean beef
  • Lean pork
  • Poultry (dark meat, in particular)
    Foods rich in non-heme iron:
  • Leafy green vegetables such as turnip greens, kale, broccoli, and spinach
  • Beans (black, kidney, lima, pinto)
  • Raisins
  • Hummus
  • Oatmeal or cream of wheat
  • Enriched breads, pastas, and cereals
  • Prunes and prune juice
  • Figs
  • Peanut butter
  • Tofu
    Foods rich in vitamin C:
  • Oranges and orange juice
  • Tomatoes
  • Red peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Strawberries
  • Kiwi

Body Fat and Fertility

All you diet and exercise fanatics out there may not be doing your fertility any favors. Although these are things that we typically think as good, too much of a good thing may sabotage your efforts to get pregnant. Losing too much body fat can affect your levels of "leptin" which starts a chain hormonal reaction. This article explains more:

Now, a study led by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) offers the first definitive proof that a lack of leptin contributes to hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) and that treatment

with a synthetic form of the hormone can restore fertility and reduce the risk of bone fractures in this group of patients. The findings are reported on-line this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). "This condition accounts for over 30 percent of all cases of amenorrhea in women of reproductive age, and is an important problem for which we didn't have a good solution," explains senior author Christos Mantzoros, MD, Dsc, Director of the Human Nutrition Unit at BIDMC and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

"Our findings now prove beyond any doubt that leptin is the missing link in women with significantly diminished body fat, and that this, in turn, results in numerous hormonal abnormalities." Without leptin, he explains, menstrual periods cease, the body becomes chronically energy-deprived and women experience bone loss and an increased risk of bone fractures.

Hormone Imbalance and Recurrent Miscarriage

I've always described getting pregnant as a synchronistic series of events like an orchestra where every instrument must play on cue. This article explains how hormonal imbalance can throw everything off just a bit causing a miscarriage when you conceive. There are a number of things that can throw hormones out of whack including body weight, stress, poor diet and so on.

From the article:

Tree of Life Fertility Bracelet
The simplest way of thinking about this in terms of its negative effects on a successful pregnancy is that the abnormal cycles indicate that the patient is either not ovulating at the appropriate time (around day 14, counting from the first day of the last period) or, if she is, she has inappropriate production or action (in terms of timing, amount, or effect) of the hormone progesterone that is made by the ovary (the corpus luteum at the site from which the egg was hatched) during the second half of the menstrual cycle and the early weeks of pregnancy.

Unusually long cycles usually reflect a delay in ovulation and are more common in women with thyroid disorders, excess amounts of the pituitary hormone prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) from any cause, and women who have ‘polycystic ovary syndrome’ that may be accompanied by hyperandrogenemia (increased levels of male hormones), elevated levels of luteinizing hormone (LH, another pituitary hormone that stimulates androgen production in the ovary), and insulin resistance. Unusually short cycles usually indicate an inadequate progesterone effect on the endometrium (often called “luteal phase defects’) and may result from too little progesterone production or from an endometrium that is less responsive to the hormone..

Chaste tree berry acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands

by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) production and mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The result is a shift in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, in favor of progesterone. The ability of chaste tree berry to raise progesterone levels in the body is an indirect effect, so the herb itself is not a hormone.

Lack of menstruation (amenorrhea) that is caused by a lack of ovulation, and therefore a lack of progesterone production, should result in menses when progesterone is taken. Progesterone-induced
Feng Shui Fertility Bracelet with healing stones click here
menses indicates an intact reproductive system that just isn't going through its cycle.

It suggests that the body is producing enough FSH to stimulate the ovaries, and that the ovaries can develop follicles. It also indicates that follicular production of estrogen is sufficient to cause the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to grow and that the sloughed endometrium is able to pass through the cervical opening and the vagina. Therefore it's possible that the problem is a dysfunction in the hypothalamus or pituitary glands. The ability of chaste tree to modulate the hypothalamus or pituitary then makes this herb a good candidate for treating amenorrhea (infertility).

It inhibits prolactin release by the pituitary gland, especially when you are under stress.

The Evidence for Vitex Agnus Castus

Here are some vitex studies relating to the use of the chasteberry:
Vitex and Fertility. In this study, a chasteberry preparation was used in a study of 3,162 women to assess the effectiveness of vitex for corpus luteum insufficiency. 77.4% had menstrual cycle disturbances of various types and the others suffered from a range of gynecological problems which included symptoms of corpus luteum insufficiency. The average length of treatment was 5 months. Hormone cytology and symptoms were used to assess the treatment.

The women reported the treatment as completely effective (33%), significant improvement (55%), and no change (7%). Their doctors reported very good results in 68% of cases, adequate in 22%, and no change in 7%.

High levels of the hormone prolactin are commonly found with corpus luteum insufficiency. Vitex is useful for reducing high prolactin levels.

The Vitex Fertility Solution - How Does the Vitex Fertility Solution Work?
By Guest Post by Olivia Hall
A well known herb called Vitex or Chasteberry is said to have a lot of ingredients that can correct a lot of hormonal imbalances in women. One of the most important factors in attempting to conceive is a regular menstrual cycle. Can the Vitex fertility solution help with this?
It has been proven time and again that Chasteberry or Vitex can correct problems including insufficient progesterone. If a woman has insufficient progesterone, she may be susceptible to ovarian cysts, endometriosis and uterine fibroids. So how does Vitex work, exactly?
1. This herb increases lutenizing hormone (LH) production and reduces or inhibits the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). These hormones are produced in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. This causes a change in the ratio between estrogen and progesterone, increasing the progesterone.
2. High levels of prolactin can be a barrier to fertility. Vitex works to reduce the high levels of this particular hormone.
3. If a woman is not having regular periods, or has no periods at all, the increase in progesterone should cause her to begin menstruating, naturally. If a woman lacks progesterone, the egg may not be released, and, of course, if the egg is not released, there is no chance of conception.
4. A daily dose of 60 drops of a tincture containing vitex or 175 mg of an extract is recommended as a vitex fertility booster.
There are some known drug interactions included with hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, and dopamine agonists. Of course, if you are trying to increase fertility, you are likely not taking any oral contraceptives. In order to get the best results from this course of treatment, you will need to take vitex for a minimum of three to six months.

Most women report noticeable results around the fourth month or menstrual cycle of taking this supplement. Vitex can be taken for up to 18 months continuously.
It is important to obtain Vitex in a supplement that is as close to natural as possible. Many so called supplements on the market contain very little active ingredient or actual herb extract, so you will need to examine and read labels very carefully.
Working towards a better hormonal balance and eventually, inducing ovulation can be achieved, with this supplement. The key to becoming pregnant is ovulating and having a regular monthly period and menstrual cycle. You can achieve this regularity with the vitex fertility treatment option.

Dandelion Fertility Tea Recipe

I'll have to admit, I've always thought of dandelions as a nuisance...until I found out what a superfood they really are.  Their bright yellow color is the first indicator that they are high in antioxidants!  You know the old saying...eat colorful fruits and vegetables for maximum health.  Dandelions are obviously inexpensive...most of us with lawns or parks nearby can easily find them.  What are the benefits of dandelions?

They cleanse the blood and help rid the body of toxic waste
They lower blood sugar
dandelion fertility tea recipe, picture of teaThey are effective against fungal and bacterial infections (including candida)
They can lower blood pressure
They are rich in vitamins, calcium potassium, iron, magnesium and more.

All of these nutrients and benefits are important if you are trying to conceive.

To make dandelion tea, first, pick fresh dandelions from an area that you are sure has not been
fertilized or sprayed with herbicides or pesticides.
Although the entire dandelion is edible, the green parts are bitter, so separate out the yellow petals for your tea.
Use fresh water in a teapot (if you are concerned about your water quality, use bottled spring water) and boil to about 170-180 degrees. Put the dandelion petals in a tea ball and place in the cup and put your heated water in the cup with the tea ball. If you would like to make a pitcher of tea, you can use a “tea sock” which will hold much more of the petals. Drink fresh or place the pitcher in the refrigerator after it is brewed to have later. It is usually recommended to drink within 72 hours for maximum freshness.

I always find it interesting how certain traditions and customs get started.
With Easter here on Sunday. I thought I would post this article about Easter, Easter Eggs, the Easter Bunny and fertility.
For those you who celebrate it, Happy Easter!

From the article:

In the British Isles and Germany, the spring fertility festival involved eggs and bunnies, because they
Click here for the St. Gerard Fertility Necklace
are natural symbols of fertility, and it also involved worshiping trees. The Christian missionaries who brought Christianity to the British Isles and to Germany suffered quite a lot of grief at the hands of our ancestors when they chopped down the sacred trees to demonstrate that they weren’t gods. Since the people did not actually worship the bunnies and eggs, the missionaries figured they could just Christianize them. So the custom began of painting Christian art on eggshells and they just tolerated the bunnies. I guess they would be greatly saddened if they could see that the eggs and the bunnies once again overshadow the cross.from:  (www.kencollins.com)

Pregnancy Over 40 After Tubal Reversal

There is a segment of women over the age of 40 who previously completed their family, have their tubes tied, but for whatever reason decide they want a child later in life.
Many times, these women are in a new relationship or are in a point in their life that they want another child. Here is an article in its entirety about how tubal ligation reversal may be better than IVF:

Study The Success Rate Of Tubal Reversal

By Den Hamphery

Due to the influx of information on these treatment plans. Always with careful consideration and advice from a supplier such as those in the Atchafalaya Obstetrics and Gynecology judgments you can decide which method is best for you.
Many women (and even patients and their doctors) think that IVF is the only real option for pregnancy after tubal pregnancy compared to later. However, in reality, the reverse tubal ligation is a
real option in many cases, probably the best option for the treatment procedure for most women. PS reversal of tubal replacement offers a higher success rate and only the cumulative effect of a successful pregnancy significantly cheaper.
A study of more than 5,000 women undergoing tubal reversal in the Atchafalaya Obstetrics and Gynecology in the last 8 years has revealed important facts will be valid only if you are considering a reversal of tubal ligation. In the study, only 36% of women undergoing in vitro fertilization has managed to unlock the passage of pregnancy and even less, only 30% of women in the study, carried a pregnancy to term and have a baby. In comparison, women who have chosen compared with IVF, tubal reversal became pregnant contributed to 66% of the hourly rate of pregnancy. Moreover, for most, a woman over 40 who often have more difficulty becoming pregnant, the results were even more striking: only 1.6 IVF women who chose to have a successful pregnancy, compared with 1 three women who had a baby after tubal reversal, double the luck with the IVF! For years, younger women or with 33% probability of live births with tubal reversal, while in vitro fertilization rate for this age group are around 15%.
In addition to being more successful in the survey are tubal ligation reversal procedure expensive because the transaction involves a lump sum at the time of surgery, after which a woman can pregnancy test is repeated as many times as she wants. Compared to IVF, where costs can be quite impressive, and compared to that, for IVF, you are obliged to pay for each treatment cycle - if you are pregnant. This means that if a cycle fails, you're not pregnant, the next time you invest again next cycle. In fact, some women pay for repeated cycles of IVF month after month without ever being pregnant at all!
Obviously do not just take our word for it. If you had a tubal ligation and are considering becoming pregnant, be sure to check it is advisable to check the pregnancy statistics and research on the success rate of reversal of tubal compared to IVF for you. We are confident that after watching it, you'll be convinced that a tubal reversal is cheaper, more efficient and flexible procedure for your pregnancy! If we hope to convince you of the prettier of the two alternatives for having more children after tubal ligation!
Women under 30 years old, the age is 43% of women gave birth to a child, while in vitro fertilization, more than half (55%) than their peers to choose the opportunity to experience a live birth, compared to 55% of IVF and Tubal Reversal became mothers. These data show that tubal reversal is an effective and much better than a good choice for comparison, you can easily make you understand the power of tubal reversal than IVF in vitro fertilization.
Many people attribute a Tubal Reversal in resolving some of these complaints. Tubal Ligation Reversal is the best way to be pregnant after tubal ligation. Reversal of Tubal Ligation becomes more secure these days. See here http://www.mybabydoc.com/

Omega 3 Fats Are Beneficial To Sperm

I keep hearing about all the benefits of Omega 3 fats in your diet.  There is research showing that saturated fats are bad for sperm.  On the other hand, men should be consuming omega 3 fats like those found in fish.

According to this study, these beneficial fats may help sperm. Although this study was done in mice, omega 3's have so many other health benefits, it probably would be a good idea for men trying to conceive to add these fats in their diet. Read more:

URBANA – According to a University of Illinois study, omega-3 fatty acids may be good for more
Saint Gerard Fertility Necklace with Biblical Stones
than heart health. A little-known omega-3 may have implications for treating male infertility.

"In our experiment, we used 'knockout' mice that lacked the gene responsible for an enzyme important in making docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In the absence of DHA, male mice are basically infertile, producing few if any misshaped sperm that can't get where they need to go," said Manabu Nakamura, a U of I associate professor of food science and human nutrition.

"We looked at sperm count, shape, and motility and tested the breeding success rate, and the mice lacking DHA simply were not able to breed," said Manuel Roqueta-Rivera, a U of I doctoral student who also worked on the study.

In the DHA-deficient knockout mice, sperm counts were extremely low. The sperm that were produced were round instead of elongated and they were unable to move well, he said.

But, when DHA was introduced into the diet, fertility was completely restored. "It was very striking. When we fed the mice DHA, all these abnormalities were prevented," he said.

This is the first time that the importance of DHA to male fertility has been shown this directly, although some studies have suggested that male fertility patients with low sperm counts and less motile sperm tend to have low levels of this fatty acid.

The DHA study is part of the Nakamura team's efforts to understand the function of the omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. As part of that work, they have developed a mouse model to help them understand a particular fat's physiological role. By knocking out genes, they can create deficiencies of the fats they are interested in and learn about their functions.

Fertility Treatments Over 40 Or Any Age, One Woman's Perspective

I frequently write about my experience with fertility treatments and how I felt like I was losing control.   It seems like I just turned my body over to the doctors and other health professionals rather than making this my journey to conceive.  In retrospect, it wasn't until I attracted my baby into my life that I got pregnant.  Here is an essay from Amelia Jones which is very insightful.  Read more:

If we allow our bodies to be instrumentalized as purely reproductive sites
rather than asserted as aspects of ourselves in a fully intersubjective relationship with the doctors we

Fertility Symbol Necklace with Healing Stones
turn to for help, we are allowing our physical body to be separated from our emotional/mental self in the most dangerous process of commodifying human life. This is a process that ultimately leads to the horrors of such cases as the recent suit brought by a divorcee in order to claim possession of embryos developed from donor eggs fertilized by her ex-husband’s sperm. Those who have infertility problems must recognize at every step our participation in this commodification and continually work to keep our bodies fully attached to our minds.

Can Chiropractic Help Women Over 40 Get Pregnant?

I never tried chiropractic when I was trying to conceive, however, there does seem to be evidence that it can help fertility especially for women over 40 who may have had more stress on their body.

Chiropractic care operates on the belief that the nervous system is the center of your bodily functions.  However, it makes sense that if your body has nerve or circulation blockages, your reproductive system will be affected. Read more about research on how chiropractic could help fertility:

The 12 studies in the series found that chiropractic had positive results regardless of the woman’s
Chakra Fertility Bracelet with stones targeting chakras
age, number of years infertile, previous medical intervention or health history including miscarriages, blocked fallopian tubes, amenorrhea, colitis, or trauma.
The first in the series, “Insult, Interference and Infertility: An Overview of Chiropractic Research,” reviewed 14 retrospective articles on the possible effect of spinal problems on fertility. All of the women in these studies were found to have vertebral subluxations – misalignments and/or related problems of the spine that interfere with how the nerves work. These problems in the spine can be corrected by chiropractors with painless adjustments to the affected spinal area.

The stress histories of these infertile women included – but were not limited to – previous motor vehicle accidents, childhood falls, blocked fallopian tubes, scoliosis, and work stress that affected both mind and body. All of the women became pregnant after their subluxations were detected and corrected.

Among the cases cited in the first JVSR study was that of a 32-year-old infertile woman who had not menstruated for 12 years. The woman had undergone a number of medical infertility treatments, but still could not conceive. After two months of chiropractic care, with attention on adjustments in the lumbar region, her menses started and after regular cycles for four months, she became pregnant.

In explaining how chiropractic adjustments could affect fertility, Madeline Behrendt, D.C., associate editor of JVSR and lead researcher of this project noted, “Essential to all processes of life is the nervous system, which perceives the environment and coordinates the cellular community’s biological response to the impinging environmental stimuli. It is reasonable to consider that a system that is properly functioning to its potential may resist destructive forces more successfully and with less damage.”

I have posted a number of articles about women and couples who conceive naturally either after having a baby through IVF or after failed IVF.  A recently published study confirms that about 30% of couples will go on to have a natural conception after IVF.  These numbers are certainly encouraging if you are currently undergoing fertility treatments and want to quit or if your fertility treatments failed.   Although I wasn't part of the study, you can count me in as a so called "hopeless case" that went on to conceive naturally.  IVF "blew out" one of my fallopian tubes with an ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancies are more common with IVF) and I still went on to conceive naturally at the age of 44.  So assisted reproduction isn't always the answer.  Read more:

The objective was to determine the likelihood of conceiving spontaneously following cessation of

IVF/ICSI; how long does it take and what factors are associated with conception? The design was an internet-based survey. All registered users of www.ivf-infertility.com received an electronic questionnaire addressing issues relating to the duration and cause of infertility, number of IVF/ICSI cycles and outcome, whether they conceived following cessation of IVF/ICSI and the time taken to conceive and outcome. Four hundred and eighty four patients responded of whom 403 met the study criteria. The overall cumulative live birth rate over a 6-year period following cessation of IVF/ICSI was 29%. Eighty-two percent of conceptions occurred within 2 years. Positive factors associated with spontaneous conception were unexplained infertility (p = 0.02), ovulation dysfunction (p = 0.01), infertility less than four years prior to IVF/ICSI (p = 0.045) and 2 years or less since discontinuation of IVF/ICSI (p < 0.001) and up to four attempts at IVF/ICSI (p = 0.02). In conclusion, 29% of couples conceived spontaneously over a 6-year period following the cessation of IVF/ICSI. The findings of this study can be used to counsel and reassure women following IVF/ICSI.tandfonline

I've heard and read many stories about how cervical mucus and its consistency is one of the critical pieces for conceiving on any given cycle.  As women get older, they may need to do more to help their bodies produce sperm friendly cervical mucus.  There are many simple things you can do that
almost seem "too easy" like drinking water.
It just makes sense that if you are dehydrated or underhydrated that your cervical mucus will be thick
Fertile Turtle Bracelet, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, White Turquoise
with less volume. When you have a cold or cough, one of the first things doctors will tell you to do is “drink plenty of fluids”. Why? Because it thins out your mucus so you can cough it up. The same thing holds true for cervical mucus, with proper hydration, the consistency will be thinner and you will have more of it. Sperm need “egg white” consistency cervical mucus.

There are many other things you can do to enhance your cervical mucus, click here to read the full article
