VACATIONS FOR GETTING PREGNANT

With vacation season upon us, I thought I'd write about how vacations may be a fun way of achieving your goal of having a baby.  I certainly wish we would have spent all the money we put into failed fertility treatments on a relaxing and memorable vacation.  I've read many articles about how there does seem to be evidence that couples have a higher rate of conceiving while they are on vacation.  Of course nobody knows for sure why but here are some possible reasons:
  • Aside from the stress of getting through an airport, vacations (at least the "kick back" kind) are a time when couples can really relax for an extended period and let their troubles go.  A different environment can also help you not think about the normal day to day problems that
    typically arise at home.
  • Sunshine - most relaxing vacations involve sunlight exposure.  There is some evidence that regular sun exposure can help the sleep cycle which is important for fertility, but it can also help regulate ovulation.  On top of that, you'll be getting a good dose of vitamin D which is important for fertility in both men and women.
  • Time for frequent intercourse.  Many couples forget that unless you're going through fertility treatments, there's only one way to get pregnant - good old fashioned intercourse.  Even if you're not going through your most fertile time, many women can spontaneously ovulate (which is why the rhythm method may not work!)  Also, sperm can live up to 7 days in some cases!

Here is an article about a resort that offers "procreation vacations":

The Five Gables keeps a light touch and sense of humor about it, including playing Barry White tunes on the stereo, but Lesher says she suspects some customers are too embarrassed to sign up for the conception package and may instead opt for the hotel's "Romantic Package."
The Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort in Marco Island, Florida, offers the similarly silly-sounding "Fertile Turtle" package, which includes a room with gulf views, a king-size bed and a private balcony. The hotel also keeps guests supplied with fertility-enhancing red clover and raspberry teas, and incorporates a massage with chaste berry, which is purported to help stimulate the pituitary gland and boost fertility.
