Homeopathy for Infertility

Pregnancy Over 40 With Homeopathy

As I've mentioned before, I didn't want to rely on paid professionals when I started my all natural journey to pregnancy and when I developed my pregnancy protocol.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com

I thought about visiting a homeopathic doctor, but, we had already spent so much on failed fertility treatments, we decided against it. However, even though I can't vouch for the effectiveness of homeopathy, it may be worth looking into if you're trying to conceive. Here is an article about homeopathy for infertility:

From the article:

"Homeopathy remedies can help to treat a variety of male and female infertility problems by improving overall health, including reproductive health.
The following remedies are helpful in remedying female infertility by helping to alleviate underlying causes of infertility:

sepia 6c: used to treat irregular or absent ovulation
sabina 6c: recommended for women who have suffered recurrent miscarriage
aurum:used when lack of sex drive and depression are thought to be the cause of infertility
silica: this remedy is used to boost a woman’s weakened immune system
phosphorus:used to treat stress as well as emotional anxiety that can accompany infertility
The following homeopathy remedies are used to treat male infertility:

sepia 6c: used to treat low sex drive
medorrhinum: this homeopathy treatment is believed to help treat impotence"

Pathological Characteristics of Women from a TCM Viewpoint

Pregnancy Over 40, Fertility and Chinese Medicine

If you're interested in traditional Chinese medicine, this gives a detailed explanation of the origin of some conditions which may lead to infertility.

1. Constitutional factors

Because of inherent differences or acquired conditions such as the environment, diet, nutrition, injuries and diseases our body constitutions vary. Our constitutional make- ups, such as under-development, weakness, predominance in yang deficiency or yin deficiency, predominance in spleen deficiency or kidney deficiency, being too fat or too slim make our body more vulnerable to certain kinds of pathogens. For example, an individual who is vulnerable to a spleen deficiency usually has problems with menstruation and fertility. On the other hand, a kidney deficiency body type may suffer from problems like miscarriage, abnormal fetal movement or infertility.

Forgiveness and Fertility

Pregnancy Over 40, Forgiveness

This article rang a bell with me. I firmly believe that many women delay having children or have trouble getting pregnant because of some deep seated anger or unresolved issues with their parents or other significant person.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I know when I ran an infertility support group, I certainly saw a pattern among many of the participants (including myself). Many of us still felt anger or sadness about our childhood and our upbringing. This article talks about the importance of forgiveness, and in my book, I talk about how I dealt with some of the unresolved issues I had with my parents. Read more:

What makes forgiveness so difficult, for so many? The greatest obstacle in the living of our life is the negative ego, which loves to hold onto a grudge and is our greatest source of resistance toward forgiveness. Our negative ego is what blocks our happiness and peace of mind. We hold within us grudges, bitterness and resentment which later manifest into stress, ulcers and poor health conditions. Ultimately, we have a choice to support our EGO or our SOUL, to be RIGHT or find PEACE.

See Also: Meditation and Visualizaiton For Fertility

Forgiveness like all other soul qualities (peace, love, innocence, respect, oneness, and passion) does not require a type of behavior. It begins with a relinquishing of emotional baggage and the choice to function from your Soul versus your negative ego. Forgiveness is a willingness to perceive everyone, including yourself, as either feeling and expressing love or perceiving it's absence, and having a need for more love. It is a relinquishing of a harmful train of thought that leads to constricting feelings. Forgiveness offers freedom to live a full and harmonious life.

Male Fertility and Cell Phone Use

Pregnancy Over 40, Male Fertility and Cell Phones

It's hard to even imagine life without a cell phone and even harder to believe I lived most of my adult life without one.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I do have one now - mostly for emergencies - I rarely just sit and chat on it. After seeing a few "near misses" when people try to drive and talk on a cell phone, it scares me. Here's another reason (at least for men) to curb cell phone use:

Agarwal’s team wanted to see whether the link between cell use and wimpy sperm was just a coincidence. They took sperm from a few dozen men and, back in the lab, kept half of each sample away from cellphone radiation and the others half an inch away from a cellphone. (An inch is about the distance between a man’s trouser pocket and his testes.) The sperm within shouting distance of the cellphones were the worst swimmers and had the most deformities.

See Also: Detoxify Your Environment For Your Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Now for the caveats. Even poor swimmers can become fathers, and questions remain about whether the sperm damage in cellphone users is severe enough to cause infertility. “When it comes to investigating whether cellphones impact . . . human reproduction,” Davis argues, “we are in the midst of another vast uncontrolled experiment on ourselves.”

Acupressure - Can It Help Fertility?

Pregnancy Over 40, Acupressure Can Help Fertility

I like the fact that acupressure can be done by yourself at home. I've included a segment on acupressure on my DVD "Fertility Bodywork"(www.getpregnantover40.com). Here is an article that talks about how it might be beneficial in terms of fertility:

According to the article:

"It is thought that pressure applied to specific points on the hands and feet can help stimulate the ovaries, uterus, and adrenal, pituitary, thyroid, and parathyroid glands to balance hormone production. According to five element theory of Oriental Medicine, infertility is influenced by the water element (inside the Bladder and Kidney areas) and the earth element (inside the spleen and stomach areas)."

Fertility Drugs And Periodontal Side Effects

Fertility Treatments and Your Gums

I've written before about how poor dental hygiene may negatively affect fertility and pregnancy.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
However the following article talks about how fertility drugs may have an unexpected side effect on gingival tissue causing inflammation and bleeding.

From the article:

Researchers found that women undergoing ovulation induction for infertility treatment for more than three menstrual cycles experience higher gingival inflammation, bleeding and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). This study appeared in the recent issue of the Journal of Periodontology. In this study, the gingival inflammation levels of women undergoing infertility treatment and subjected to ovulation induction were investigated and compared with women who were not using these drugs.

See Also: IVF Over 40 (www.getpregnantover40.com)

It found that despite similar plaque levels, women who received ovulation induction medications for more than three menstrual cycles had higher levels of gingival inflammation, bleeding and GCF. GCF is a fluid that contains enzymes and tissue breakdown products that have been examined as potential markers for the progression of periodontitis.

"These effects are presumably correlated with the increased levels of progesterone and estrogen," explains Dr. Cenk M. Haytac, Cukurova University, Adana, Turkey. "Gingiva is a target tissue for estrogen since it contains specific high-affinity estrogen receptors."

Fertility and Soy

Soy and Fertility - There are conflicting reports on female fertility

I did eat a certain amount of soy while I was trying to conceive because I have read that it can be a hormone regulating food.
 My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Since that time I've come across some claims that soy can actually hurt fertility. However, this article (cited below) and many others are reassuring that soy will not negatively affect fertility. However, soy is not recommended for men when their partner is trying to conceive since the phytoestrogens may have an effect on their hormones. Read more:

Women in Asian countries where a lot of soy is consumed have dramatically lower rates of breast cancer than women in the United States. One explanation is that plant estrogens, called isoflavones, increase menstrual cycle length or reduce ovarian hormones both which would reduce lifetime exposure to estrogen. However, these changes in the menstrual cycle could also impair fertility.

In a study of monkeys, which have menstrual cycles similar to those of women, Kaplan and colleagues tested the hypothesis that the estrogen in soy can affect menstrual cycles.

See Also: Foods for Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

"Our study was designed to determine whether a soy supplement containing twice the level of plant estrogen consumed by Asian women would alter any aspect of the menstrual cycle or ovarian function in monkeys," he said.

For one year, half of the monkeys were fed a high-soy diet and half got their protein from animal sources. All monkeys were evaluated during this period for changes in ovarian hormones and menstrual cycles.

"Soy treatment did not change any characteristics of the menstrual cycle, including length, amount of bleeding or hormone levels," said Kaplan. "This suggests that any protection that soy may provide against breast cancer does not come from changes in the menstrual cycle."

Shoes for Fertility? Stick to Flats

Pregnancy Over 40, Trying To Conceive Over 40, Wear Sensible Shoes

Who'd have thunk it?? Here's another reason that working in the corporate world for so many years contributed to my infertility.
My site:  www.getpregnantover40.com
I wore high heels with my business suits almost daily. Not only did I get bunions on my feet, but I may have hurt my reproductive system.   I've heard that high heels can make your pelvis misalign because it is trying to correct for being thrown forward.  This can cause everything from urinary tract infections to deceased blood flow to your pelvic organs.

From the article:

"Most important are the potential problems that high heels can cause in relation to fertility, menstrual cycles and abdominal function. When you wear high-heels, the pressure on the front of the foot causes you to compensate by excessive forward tilting of the pelvis. If left unchecked, this can lead to menstrual dysfunction and increases in period pains as well as affecting the ability to conceive," he said.

"Most women are intimately aware that the prolonged wearing of even moderate heels can cause foot, ankle and knee problems and lead to back pain. But it's not just about the feet, it affects every single function in every joint and muscle throughout the body and can seriously affect the health of women that insist upon wearing them,"

Can You Feel Yourself Conceive?

Pregnancy Over 40, Natural Conception, Can You Feel It?

No, I did not know when I conceived my daughter...as a matter of fact, it seems like every time I was pregnant, I was sure I wasn't.
 My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
But some women swear that they know the moment they conceived. When I ran an infertility support group, the other 44 year old woman in our group (who conceived naturally and had a home birth) insisted that she knew the moment she conceived. I'm certainly not doubting her...I think there's quite a bit that medical science can't explain and I think we all know our own bodies better than anyone else. This article talks about the difficulty in actually pinpointing the moment of conception and how other events may give you that sensation. Read more:

From the article:

Can You Tell When It Happens?

Some women say they knew they were pregnant the moment it happened. For them, the question "When did I conceive?" seems easy. They talk about a feeling of excitement, of certainty, even of completeness. It is possible that some women can tell. It's also possible that these women thought they "knew" they were pregnant at other times, too, and then forgot about that feeling when the pregnancy test was negative.

See Also: Create Your Own Vision Boards If You're Trying To Conceive (www.getpregnantover40.com)

About twenty percent of women have physical symptoms when they ovulate. These women feel a sharp or crampy pain, called mittleschmerz, on one side of the pelvis around the time that an egg is released. If you have mittleschmerz, you'll be able to guess your conception date within a few days.

If your periods are regular, you can keep track of your ovulation dates by monitoring your body temperature and your vaginal secretions. You can learn more about this at Signs of Ovulation.

Everyday Threats To Fertility

Pregnancy Over 40 and Environmental Threats

All of those modern conveniences that we've come to count on are great, but they may not be so great for our fertility.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I've read numerous articles on how women who are trying to conceive should limit their exposure to electromagnetic fields. Here is an article that may find some association between everyday electrical appliances and reduced fertility:

A team of Italian scientists, whose work is published in today's Human Reproduction journal, found that mouse ovarian follicles exposed to extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields failed to develop into good quality eggs.

The authors fear the fertility of women regularly exposed to appliances such as computers, refrigerators, washing machines and kettles may be similarly affected because of the magnetic field generated when an electrical device is on. An electromagnetic field (EMF) is also present when an appliance is on standby.

The National Radiological Protection Board, the radiation watchdog, insisted there was no cause for alarm but said it would look at the findings, saying EMF levels in the study were close to industrial guidelines for safety at work.

See Also:  Detoxify Your Environment For Your Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Scientists at L'Aquilia and La Sapienza universities in Rome, Italy, found that ELF electromagnetic fields hindered the development of a culture of ovarian follicles from a mouse.

Ovarian follicles go through a number of stages before developing into an egg that can be fertilised. A crucial step is the creation of the follicle's central cavity, called the antrum.

A team led by Dr Sandra Cecconi, from L'Aquilia, exposed pre-antral cells to ELF radiation at frequencies of 33 hertz or 50 hertz. On the fifth day of the tests, only about a third of the follicles exposed to 33 hertz radiation and half of those exposed to the 50 hertz radiation had developed antral cavities, compared with 80 per cent of cells that had been kept away from EMFs.

Dr Cecconi said: "Our results raise concerns that ELF-EMF exposure might impair female reproductive potential by reducing the capacity of follicles to reach the developmental stage that is an essential for successful reproduction."

Egg Catches Sperm - Sperm Doesn't Penetrate Egg

Pregnancy Over 40, How Does Fertilization Occur?

Well, forget everything you know about fertilization and conception.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Eggs actually catch sperm vs. sperm penetrating the egg. This article explains more:

From the article

They had started the year before with a simple experiment--measuring human sperm’s ability to escape and swim away from a tiny suction pipet placed against the side of the sperm cell’s head. To the team’s great surprise, the sperm turned out to be feeble swimmers; their heads thrashed from side to side ten times more vigorously than their bodies pushed forward. It makes sense, says Martin. The last thing you’d want a sperm to be is a highly effective burrower, because it would end up burrowing into the first obstacle it encountered. You want a sperm that’s good at getting away from things.

See Also: Improving Cervical Mucus (www.getpregnantover40.com)

The team went on to determine that the sperm tries to pull its getaway act even on the egg itself, but is held down against its struggles by molecules on the surface of the egg that hook together with counterparts on the sperm’s surface, fastening the sperm until the egg can absorb it. Yet even after having revealed the sperm to be an escape artist and the egg to be a chemically active sperm catcher, even after discussing the egg’s role in tethering the sperm, the research team continued for another three years to describe the sperm’s role as actively penetrating the egg.

Molds, Infertility, Miscarriage & Birth Defects

Pregnancy Over 40 and Molds

I live in a very dry climate, so mold has never been much of an issue.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com

However, many parts of this country and other countries are quite humid which may encourage the growth of mold. I never knew mold toxins could cause infertility or miscarriage, but here is an article that explains how molds can affect your fertility:

From the site:

Some mold toxins interfere with the hormones that regulate the various steps of pregnancy. Hormones tell the baby when to add what body parts. They tell mom when to pass on timely materials to the placenta, for example.

See Also: Detoxify Your Environment For Your Fertility

Ask any OB/GYN how many different stages mom and baby have to go through and he/she will tell you that they don’t know. ANTIOXIDANTS HELP ELIMINATE FREE RADICALS FOR FERTILITY

Pregnancy Over 40, Free Radicals and Fertility

A "free radical" sounds like a throwback from the 60's doesn't it?
Well...in this context, a free radical is an unstable oxygen molecule which can cause tissue damage and affect fertility. "Antioxidants" can help repair or prevent tissue damage from free radicals. One reason you're always hearing about eating colorful fruits and vegetables is because they're loaded with these helpful antioxidants. Here is an excerpt about a study done on how free radicals can harm fertility:
____________
SEE ALSO: GETPREGNANTOVER40.COM FOR MORE ARTICLES ON DETOXIFYING YOUR BODY AND ENVIRONMENT FOR FERTILITY AND GETTING PREGNANT
____________

From the article:

Recently there is a growing evidence of possible role of highly
reactive products of oxygen, termed free radicals, in
infertility. A free radical is defined as molecular species
capable of independent existence and containing one or more
unpaired electrons, making them paramagnetic and relatively
active. These are formed as natural byproducts of oxygen
metabolism and serve the purpose of burning bacteria and
refuse body matter but when out of control, they become
toxic and start damaging body tissues by a process called
oxidative stress. Substances that neutralize the potential ill
effects of free radicals are called antioxidant or free radical scavengers. Imbalance between these oxidants and
antioxidants is responsible for tissue injury and affects
fertility The aim of this study was to know the status of free radicals
and their scavenging enzymes in the blood and endometrial
tissue in infertile women and to develop base line data in
different cases of female infertility...

Conclusion
Our study supports etiological role of free radicals in female
infertility. It also shows that damage is more pronounced at
endometrial tissue in unexplained infertility, as levels of MDA
are highest and of CAT and SOD are lowest in the
endometrium. Damage is more at local endometrial tissue
level as compared to that seen in blood.

Can Aromatherapy Enhance Fertility Over 40?

Pregnancy Over 40, Can Aromatherapy Help?

I don't know much about aromatherapy except for what I've read.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I think we all underestimate the power of our sense of smell. Certain smells can trigger memories and change our moods. Here is an article about how aromatherapy can help boost fertility in men and women:

From the article:

There are several oils that are reported to help increase fertility. The first is Clary sage, a golden yellow oil. This earthy oil is said to help calm nerves and reduce stress. It is also considered to have aphrodisiac properties. Rubbed into the skin over the reproductive organs it is said to help balance estrogen levels and remedy infertility.

See Also: Fertility Detoxification (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Rose essential oil is another great choice to increase fertility. It has a pleasing, soothing scent. Like Clary sage, it is said to have aphrodisiac properties. Rose is excellent for enhancing both male and female fertility. Have your man take warm (not hot) baths with several drops of rose oil in the water. You can do the same. This will increase sperm count in him and help enhance reproductive health in you.

Rosemary was traditionally woven into bridal headdresses because it was believed to grant fertility to young brides. The essential oil of rosemary is also seen to have fertility enhancing properties. Rosemary oil, diluted in gentle carrier oil, can be rubbed between the hip bones to help sooth inflammation in reproductive organs, or to help open blockages. Men may also find this helps.

Finally the versatile and ever pleasing lavender oil is useful for increasing fertility. Lavender is soothing and has slight aphrodisiac effects, both of which help to make lovemaking more pleasurable. This pleasure allows for the right temperature, lubrication, and alkalinity for conception to be present in the body. Lavender oil is wonderful equalizing oil and is gentle enough to be used right on the skin or as carrier oil for drops of other fertility enhancers.

Infertility - Get Me Out of Here!

Pregnancy Over 40, Infertility Wears You Down

Well, I hit this wall a number of times.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I was going to throw in the towel on getting pregnant. But, as fate would have it, the carrot got dangled in front of me again...and, of course, I chased it like a silly rabbit (well...in retrospect, maybe not so silly).

After our years of fertility treatments, multiple surgeries, the loss of one of my fallopian tubes, and $25,000, I said enough already! I'm outta here. You can take your fertility drugs and needles and stick it (no pun intended!) Goodbye to the perfect little life I had envisioned. Life isn't made to order and it's not a perfect world. I rolled the dice and I lost. Get over it - and I was ready to.

See Also: Why Can't I Have A Baby?

So then what happens? The carrot got dangled in front of me. After completing fertility treatments, I got pregnant on my own (four times) three of which ended in miscarriage. Even though I miscarried all but my last pregnancy, I got back in the game.

I guess I'm a living example that even in the depths of despair, good things can happen. The saying, "the darkest hour is just before the dawn" certainly held true in my case. And I'm not the only one...I know of and hear from many women who finally gave up on fertility treatments and started living a healthy lifestyle only to get pregnant naturally.

Perfluorinated Chemicals decrease fertility

Pregnancy Over 40, Chemicals Affect Fertility

I've written before about toxic chemicals in the environment and reduced fertility.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
The articles below site actual research that confirms that Perfluorinated chemicals actually do affect fertility. I have cited the research below. The last article highlighted in red gives some suggestions on what to do to avoid these toxic substances.

Watch for packaged foods. Stay away from greasy or oily packaged and fast foods, as the packages often contain grease-repellent coatings. Examples include microwave popcorn bags, french fry boxes, and pizza boxes.

See Also: Detoxify Your Environment (www.getpregnantover40.com

Avoid stain-resistance treatments. Choose furniture and carpets that aren’t marketed as “stain-resistant,” and don’t apply finishing treatments such as Stainmaster to these or other items. Where possible, choose alternatives to clothing that has been treated for water or stain resistance, such as outerwear and sportswear. Other products that may be treated include shoes, luggage, and camping and sporting equipment.

Check your personal-care products. Avoid personal-care products made with Teflon or containing ingredients that include the words ”fluoro” or ”perfluoro.” PFCs can be found in dental floss and a variety of cosmetics, including nail polish, facial moisturizers, and eye make-up.

Avoid Teflon® or non-stick cookware. If you choose to continue using non-stick cookware, be very careful not to let it heat to above 450ºF. Do not leave non-stick cookware unattended on the stove, or use non-stick cookware in hot ovens or grills. Discard products if non-stick coatings show signs of deterioration.

Lowering FSH With Your Diet - Fertility Foods

Pregnancy Over 40 and High FSH

Many women struggle with FSH levels that are high or borderline.
See:  www.getpregnantover40.com for more information on natural ways to conceive
This article talks about some dietary changes that may help and some special considerations for women with type O blood. Read more:

So what should you do?

How can you lower high FSH levels and produce higher quality eggs?

First and foremost is optimal nutrition with adequate intake of protein, good fats and complex carbohydrates. Iron and vitamin E are crucial for healthy egg development and maturation. Many women are low in iron which leads to general fatigue, pallor and heavy periods.
The herbs Shatavari, Dong Quai and Rehmannia have traditionally been used to treat poor egg quality and are often prescribed to women in their late thirties and early forties...

See Also: Get Pregnant With High FSH (www.getpregnantover40.com)

...replacing 25 grams of animal protein with 25 grams of plant protein would lower your risk of ovulatory infertility by 50%.

Dr. D`Adamo discovered that O blood types should consume adequate amounts of iodine or sea algae (Kelp) as it acts as a blood tonic for O blood types and as such has a medicinal effect. What`s interesting to note here is the fact that iodine, selenium and zinc (found in Kelp) are crucial for healthy thyroid function. Ovaries have receptors for thyroid hormone thyroxine, which is required for follicle production

Infertility, Sometimes You Need To Cry

Pregnancy Over 40, Fertility Over 40, Yes, You May Cry!

My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I wrote before about how crying is actually a good thing for your physical and emotional health (see my previous post TTC? Have a Good Cry".)

Here is another article about how you may need to cry and how to create a safe time and place:

From the article:

Don't Hold Back The Tears
Putting on a false smile isn't going to create a miracle. And feeling sadness over the loss and frustration that infertility brings does not negate the goodness in our lives. You can be thankful for what you have, and still feel sadness over what you don't. These aren't contradictions.

See Also: Stress, The Most Overlooked Factor In Our Control When It Comes To Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

When you need to cry, it's important to let yourself do so. Holding in sadness doesn't make it go away. Instead, it eats up the emotional energy you have to cope with and face your daily life. Tears find their way to sneak out, sometimes at the worst moments. Sometimes, sadness that is held in may present itself as anxiety or panic.

On the other hand, you don't want the sadness eating away at your life. When things are really difficult, it can help to choose a contained period of time to let the tears out. It may seem strange -– scheduling in some time to cry. But it's surprisingly effective and freeing.

Can Hypnosis Help You Get Pregnant?

Pregnancy Over 40 and Hypnosis

I never tried hynosis when I was trying to conceive, however, I do believe that having the right mindset can help you get pregnant.
My site:  www.getpregnantover40.com
You might also have issues from your past that might be acting as a roadblock. Here's an article about a hynotherapist who specializes in helping people with fertility problems:
Couples struggling to conceive may find the biggest barrier to fertility is a mental one, Lynsi Eastburn says.

See Also: Have A Baby Over 40 With Vision Boards (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Eastburn, a Denver hypnotherapist, uses hypnosis to aid people with fertility problems and has trained therapists around the world in her Hypno-Fertility methods. She details her approach in a new book, “It’s Conceivable!”

She sees hypnosis as an effective tool for reducing stress and removing subconscious blocks stemming from issues such as an abortion, miscarriage or unresolved sexual trauma that may affect a woman’s ability to conceive.

Eastburn doesn’t claim to reverse medical conditions that can cause infertility, but she aims to achieve the best state of mind and body conducive to fertility.

“What I’m doing is helping the mind reset the body, basically,” she said.

Her work with fertility patients began with women seeking to relax as they underwent fertility treatments or hoping to overcome a fear of the needles used in in vitro fertilization. Success with those women led her to see broader uses for hypnosis in overcoming fertility problems.

“We started out as a general hypnotherapy practice, but I’m almost exclusively fertility now,” she said.

More Evidence That Fertility Treatments May Not Be Any Better Than Trying Naturally

Pregnancy Over 40, Fertility Treatments May Not Be The Answer

I'm always glad to see articles such as the one below which confirm my choice to conceive naturally.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I realize that some couples may need fertility treatments depending on their diagnosis, however, for couples who are diagnosed with "unexplained" infertility, the natural route may be best. I have this article posted on my website, but if you haven't seen it, here it is. Read more:

From the article:

"Unexplained fertility problems - where no obvious abnormalities can be found - account for about 40% of female infertility and 8-28% of infertility in couples.

Data suggests that there is a 33-60% chance that such couples will conceive naturally over three years.

See Also: Why Clomid May Hurt Your Chances Of Getting Pregnant (www.getpregnantover40.com)

The latest study, by Pieternel Steures and colleagues at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam, focused on couples with unexplained fertility problems who were estimated to have a 30-40% chance of conceiving spontaneously within 12 months.

The estimations were based on the woman's age, how long the couple had been experiencing subfertility and the results of lab tests, including sperm analysis.

Half were randomly assigned to the fertility treatment for six months and the other half were asked to carry on trying to conceive naturally for six months.

The fertility treatment, intrauterine insemination (IUI) with controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, involved using drugs to make the woman's ovaries produce eggs and inserting her partner's sperm directly into her womb.

With the fertility treatment, 42 (33%) women conceived and 29 (23%) had ongoing pregnancies. Similarly, in the group that carried on trying to conceive naturally, 40 (32%) women conceived and 34 (27%) had ongoing pregnancies.

Therefore, in terms of successful pregnancies, the fertility treatment added no benefit. Given the serious health risks associated with this form of assisted reproduction, expectant management would be a better option for these couples, say the authors.

Pregnancy Over 40 and IVF Success Rates

I've always said statistics are for statisticians because sometimes there are many unknown factors that go into the numbers.

If you've ever analyzed fertility clinic success rates, you may be interested in how some of these numbers are calculated. This article talks about little known facts about success rates.

1. The CDC data is three years old. Why?
First, the clinics have to report live births, which occur approximately nine months after the ART cycles are complete. Additionally, the CDC needs time to compile, review, print, and publish the data.

2. A number of factors influence clinic success rates.
Some important ones include:

Some clinics are more “selective” about the patients they choose.
Patients’ age, diagnosis, and other factors impact (and possibly boost) success rates.
The number of embryos transferred.
Single embryo transfer, while better for the patient and the baby, may lead to lower success rates—meaning fewer live births. But can “success” be defined as having quadruplets who spend months in the NICU? Or is success the birth one healthy baby?

3. Success rates related to specific diagnoses aren’t reported.
While the individual clinic reports tell you the percentage of patients with specific diagnoses, the success rates don’t tell you whether your particular fertility issue has a good chance of being treated at a particular clinic.

A new study conducted in 300 normal men showed a positive correlation between the percentage of motile sperm and serum vitamin D levels. The study was recently published in the scientific journal Human Reproduction, and showed additionally that stimulation of human spermatooza in the laboratory with activated vitamin D can increase their forward movement.

Can our ovaries make new eggs?

Pregnancy Over 40 and New Eggs In Ovary

Some very encouraging research has been done that is throwing the scientific community in a tailspin.
 My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
There may be evidence that our ovaries have 'reserves' and that we may be able to make new eggs contrary to the current belief that we are born with all the eggs we will ever have. Here is the article from the NIH:

We are told we have a finite number of eggs and the number of those eggs becomes less and less as we age. There are some new theories about our eggs which are being explored with solid research. It is true we have eggs when we are born and that number becomes less, however there is more.

We may be making new eggs. This would parellel the function of germ-line stem cells in males, which make new sperm throughout the male's fertile life. This could make sense. The body likes to have back up for many of its most important functions. We have two lungs; we can function with one. We have two kidneys; we can live with only one. We have two ovaries;it only takes one for a successful pregnancy. There are also many biochemical backup systems in the body. So why wouldn't the body want a back up plan for its reproductive system? Why wouldn't it want to provide you with the ability to make more eggs, as men make more sperm?

A recent study at Harvard Medical School with Massachusetts General Hospital discovered evidence that may override the old theory of eggs and egg life. The study found that femail mice have germ-line stem cells in their ovaries that can make new eggs throughout the female's fertile life. This has profound implicaitons for us.
