How Stress Affects Male Fertility and What You Can Do

Pregnancy Over 40, Men Need To Reduce Stress Too

See More Articles On Fertility At: getpregnantover40.com

I frequently talk about how stress affects female fertility but this article gives a detailed explanation of how stress affects men and some things to do about it.  Stress hormones, if left unchecked can wreak havoc on your reproductive system.  Read more:

It is estimated that approximately 1/3 of all cases of infertility are due to issues relating to the male reproductive process. In recent months, several important developments have been reported in scientific literature that may help improve male fertility. As is often the case, both body and mind play a role. But best of all, these proposed remedies are all natural and relatively inexpensive.
Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha)

See Also: Stress, Infertility and Miscarriage (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Stress is an inevitable part of every day life. But new research from the University of California, Berkeley offers one more reason for men to better manage it. When stress hormones, such as cortisol, increase in the male body, it leads to a subsequent decrease in another hormone called gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH is made in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, and it plays a role in the production of key hormones (luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone) that can affect the quality and quantity of sperm. This stress/fertility link has been fairly well established in years past. (1,2,3)

Now, scientists have discovered another way by which stress can negatively impact male reproductive health. It appears that glucocortiocoids (stress hormones) also instigate the manufacture of a substance called gonadotropin inhibitory hormone (GnIH). This alteration in brain chemistry encourages a further decline in GnRH and the sex hormones necessary for proper sperm activity and production. Another consequence is a decline in sex drive caused by a drop in testosterone levels.

TTC? Have a Good Cry...

Pregnancy Over 40, Tears May Help

While I can't really say that crying will help you conceive, the article below gives some good evidence that crying may be good for stress reduction and your overall health - both of which are good for fertility. Read more:

"Emotional tears contain three chemicals released by the body during stress: 1) Leucine-enkephalin — a mood-elevating and pain reducing endorphine 2) ACTH — a hormone considered to be the most reliable indicator of stress and 3) Prolactin — the hormone that regulates milk production in mammals.

See Also: Stress, Infertility and Miscarriage (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Frey states that emotional crying has a physical purpose: tears are secreted through a duct, much like urination. He believes that like urination, tearing may be involved in removing toxic substances or waste products from the body. He posits that this is why so many people report feeling better after crying. The venting of emotions is helpful, but the actual chemical composition of the discharged tears may be involved in this feeling of well-being.

Interestingly, there is a 24 percent higher concentration of protein in emotional tears than in irritant tears. This protein carries the molecular code for emotions throughout the body. Frey also states that our tear gland concentrates manganese, a mineral involved with our moods, and tears remove this concentrated mineral from our body. The concentration of manganese is 30 times greater in tears than in blood serum. And while irritant tears were 98 percent water, emotional tears contained many more toxins."

Can You Get Pregnant On Your Period? Are You Fertile On Your Period?

Getting Pregnant On Your Period Is Possible

Many women wonder if they can get pregnant on their period.
 More Articles at www.getpregnantover40.com
Women who are not experiencing infertility and want to avoid pregnancy mistakenly think that having intercourse during their menstrual cycle is safe to avoid pregnancy, but that isn't necessarily true.  Even though getting pregnant on your period is unlikely, it could happen.

If you had intercourse while on your period, it's possible that you could ovulate shortly thereafter and, assuming the sperm survived long enough, you could get pregnant. Read more:

Typically, when you have your period, another egg is developing in preparation for release during the current cycle. But not every woman's cycle length is the same. Many women have a cycle that's about 28 days long, but some have cycles as short as 22 days long. If you have a shorter cycle, you could ovulate just a few days after you have your period. And considering that sperm can survive in your reproductive tract for up to three days, it's theoretically possible for the sperm to hang around until you ovulate again.

See Also: Why Clomid May Hurt Your Chances Of Conception (www.getpregnantover40.com)

It's also possible to mistake breakthrough bleeding — spotting between your periods — for a regular period. So you may be bleeding right at the time of ovulation, when you're most fertile.

The time that it takes for an egg to develop, or mature, within the ovary can vary, and therefore, the actual day of ovulation can vary by several to many days. Some ovulation kits also base the "fertile time" on rising estrogen levels rather than the peak of luteinizing hormone, or LH, which is the actual trigger for egg release. In those situations the "fertile time" may seem to be longer.

Yikes! 150 Kids From One Sperm Donor

Pregnancy Over 40, Donor Sperm

I have nothing against sperm donation...if your partner suffers from male factor infertility or if you're without a partner, sperm donation may be a viable option. However, as this article explains, few controls have been in place. In this story, one donor has been used to father a whopping 150 children!

See Also: Successful Pregnancy At 44(www.getpregnantover40.com)

This is just one example... how many others are out there? Could this lead to something called "accidental incest" which is when two half sibling unknowingly meet and produce a child together? Even though most people think this is a rare occurrence, I'm surprised at the number of stories I've read about people who knew each other, and later found out they had the same donor! What's to keep these people from getting involved romatically? Read more:

Critics say that fertility clinics and sperm banks are earning huge profits by allowing too many children to be conceived with sperm from popular donors, and that families should be given more information on the health of donors and the children conceived with their sperm. They are also calling for legal limits on the number of children conceived using the same donor’s sperm and a re-examination of the anonymity that cloaks many donors.

“We have more rules that go into place when you buy a used car than when you buy sperm,” said Debora L. Spar, president of Barnard College and author of “The Baby Business: How Money, Science and Politics Drive the Commerce of Conception.” “It’s very clear that the dealer can’t sell you a lemon, and there’s information about the history of the car. There are no such rules in the fertility industry right now.”

Ovary May Replenish Eggs Contrary To Popular Belief

Pregnancy Over 40 and New Egg Supply

I've written about this subject before, some studies suggest that there may be a way for the ovaries to replenish their egg supply.
The current belief is that a woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have. Read more:

Women may possess a hidden cache of stem cells in the bone marrow that constantly replenish the ovaries with new eggs, a new study suggests.

The idea contradicts long-established scientific dogma that holds that a woman is born with a complement of eggs that must last throughout her reproductive life.

See Also: DHEA For Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

The theory, proposed by researchers at the Massachusetts General Hospital, would, if confirmed, have major implications for fertility treatments, but at present it has many critics.

The researchers, led by Jonathan Tilly, report in this week's issue of Cell that the cache of germ-line stem cells in the bone marrow send cells via the blood stream, to the ovaries, which signal to the marrow when new supplies are needed.

Their work depends mostly on experiments with mice but they also cite cases where women have received bone marrow transplants after chemotherapy and unexpectedly conceived - the result, the researchers suggest, of receiving a new supply of oocyte-making cells from the new bone marrow.

Genes, Obesity, and Fertility

Pregnancy Over 40, Genes and Fertility

I'm always amazed at how human beings evolved.
Many health problems either involve evolutionary changes that are no longer necessary or mutated genes which are passed on to the next generation and so on. Here is an interesting article from BBC news about our genes, obesity, and fertility:

In normal circumstances, when food intake is sufficient, fat cells produce a hormone called leptin, which in turn, say the researchers, switches on TORC1, decreasing appetite, and enabling reproduction.

In times of food shortage, a lack of leptin leaves TORC1 switched off, leaving appetite unchecked and preventing pregnancy, which would use too much of a woman's energy.

This, said the Salk researchers, would be an important evolutionary advantage in times of famine.

See Also: Foods For Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

However, they argued that a subtle mutation in the TORC1 gene might also play a role in obesity, by failing to pass on the "stop eating" signal even when food is plentiful.

If passed from generation to generation, it could mean an inherited extra risk of obesity, they said.

The failure of the gene to work properly could also affect fertility, by not allowing reproduction to proceed.

Prostaglandins, Endometriosis and Hormone Regulation

Pregnancy Over 40, Prostaglandins and Endometriosis May Harm Fertility

As most of you probably know, endometriosis is one of the causes of infertility in women.
There are many theories about how endometriosis begins, but prostaglandins can contribute to the painful symptoms of the condition. This article explains what you can do to help encourage the "good" prostaglandins and discourage the "bad" prostaglandins. Not only can this help endometriosis, but it can help your fertility too. Read more:

Prostaglandins, which are stimulated by estrogen, are the hormones responsible for those painful cramps you feel during menstruation as well as possibly menorrhagia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea that you may also experience.

See Also: Make Your Own Castor Oil Packs To Reduce Inflammation (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Prostaglandins actually break down into three different forms: prostaglandin E1 (PGE1); prostaglandin E2 (PGE2); and prostaglandin F2a (PGF2a). While PGE1 can help alleviate endometriosis symptoms, PGE2 contributes to menorrhagia and PGF2a to vomiting, nausea and diarrhoea. Together, PGE2 and PGF2a produce the immense period pain women with endometriosis must deal with. However, by changing your diet, it is possible to block PGE2 and PGF2a while encouraging the production of PGE1 to help your symptoms.

Infertility Remedies - 3 Tips How To Use Your Mind-Body Connection to Get Pregnant

Pregnancy Over 40, Mind Body Connection

I thought I would post this article because it is consistent with what I recommend in my Meditation and Visualization CD (www.getpregnantover40.com). Read more:

Guest Post By Liv Riley

If you have been trying to get pregnant for more than a year with no luck, it is likely that you are seeking infertility remedies which will help you conceive. Often couples who are having infertility issues not only deal with the physical aspect of their fertility, but also the emotional aspect as well. Feelings of despair, defeat, anger, low self-esteem, jealousy and resentment to other mothers and their babies are normal emotions to have.
A visit to your doctor is always advised to rule out any conditions such as endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count and motility, irregular periods or any other physical conditions which may be influencing your reproductive organs. If a physical condition is confirmed, then a decision must be made as to how to deal with it. Many conventional modern day medicines and procedures are available such as prescribed fertility drugs and IVF but many women and men are seeking out all natural fertility solutions which have worked miracles for many couples.
One reason all natural infertility remedies work so well is they encompass the entire person and focus on the mind-body connection. When feeling negative emotions about difficulties getting pregnant, your negative thoughts are having a physical effect on your body. Thoughts affect your reproductive system in a negative way when you constantly beat up on yourself. When you experience despair, anger and self-pity regarding your infertility, a chemical boost of neuropeptide is released into your system which changes the function of your biology.

3 Tips How To Use Your Mind-Body Connection To Help You Get Pregnant Are:
1. Recognize your negative self-talk about getting pregnant
This is the initial step to making a huge difference in your bodies ability to conceive. If you are constantly asking yourself "What's wrong with me and Why can't I get pregnant (which generates negative emotions) the negative connection between your mind and body are strengthened. Recognize your negative self-talk and replace it with compassionate self-talk and understanding. Ask yourself, what would I say to my sister or my very best friend if she were going through the same thing? Then give the same advice to yourself.
2. Set A New Mental Image Of Your Pregnancy
What you think on a daily basis sets the tone for what the universe will provide for you. If you want to get pregnant and have a baby, that is exactly where your mind needs to be. Substitute the negative self-talk with a positive expectation of pregnancy. As you imagine yourself pregnant, your tendency to take care of your bodies fertility will also increase. Simple infertility remedies such as self-massage which increases blood flow, herbs for infertility which regulate hormonal balance are great places to start.
3. Know That Your Thoughts DO create Your Reality
Many couples are beginning to embrace the power of the mind-body connection pertaining to their fertility. If you continue to stay in negative self-talk thought patterns, those same thought patterns will keep producing the same result; no pregnancy. You can't expect different results if you keep doing nothing differently. Know that your thoughts do create your reality and the more you focus on what you want rather than what you don't want, your pregnancy will become reality.
Your body and mind do not work independently of each other. Treating just one aspect of your infertility, such as your body, and disregarding your mental state is undermining your chance to conceive. The mind-body connection is extremely powerful and enables you to have much more control over your fertility than you might think! Each small healthy mind-body choice you make will increase your chance of getting pregnant.
There is no time like the present to take control of nurturing your mind and body and stimulating your reproductive organs. You do have the power to make a difference and get pregnant quickly and naturally. There are plenty of natural infertility rememdies that can help you conceive.Discover the true story of a woman who dedicated her life to creating the ultimate pregnancy solution. A Solution which permanently reverses the root of infertility and has proven to help many women get pregnant fast.

Sperm Affected By Fat Intake - Especially Bad Fats

Pregnancy Over 40, Men and Fats

I've written numerous posts about good and bad fats and their affect on fertility for both men and women. This article sites a study which looked at sperm quality and its relationship to the amount and type of fat consumed by men. Read more:

From the article:

In their study, of 99 American men, Attaman and colleagues found that a high total fat intake was linked to a lower total sperm count and concentration.

They also found that the sperm of men whose diets contained more omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, the type of fat that is often present in fish and plant oils, was better formed than that of men who ate less of these healthier fats...

See Also: Fish Oils To Prevent Miscarriage (www.getpregnantover40.com)

...They found that compared with those in the bottom third, the top third, who ate the most fat, had a 43% lower total sperm count and a 38% lower sperm concentration.

Total sperm count is the total number of sperm in one ejaculation of semen. Sperm concentration is the amount of sperm in a millilitre of semen.

The results also showed that the relationships between fat in the diet and semen quality appeared to be largely driven by intake of saturated fats.

Chlamydia Affects Men's Fertility Too

Pregnancy Over 40, Chlamydia in Men

Most of the information I've read on chlamydia associates the infection with fallopian tube damage and pelvic inflammatory disease in women, but it affects men too.
My website: Pregnancy Over 40 Naturally
Symptoms may be mild and therefore ignored, but it can cause pain or burning with urination, itching, and swollen testicles.   Read more:

Couples were followed up for 37 months and were compared with women who had conceived naturally. The study found that a quarter of infertile women and a fifth of infertile men had antibodies. Among infertile couples with IgG antibodies - a sign of previous or persistent chlamydia infection - 6.8 per cent of women and 7.1 per cent of men carried the chlamydia DNA in their urine, which suggested they had an active infection.

See Also: Can Chicken Pox Affect Men's Fertility? (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Professor Jan Olofsson, who headed the research team said their research showed that if a man had chlamydia antibodies a couple's chance of conceiving was significantly reduced and that chlamydia, known to affect female fertility had now also been shown that as a potentially serious issue for men too.

Sperm Friendly Lubricant

Pregnancy Over 40, Lubricants For Fertility

Most of us have known for a long time that lubricants are a big "no no" if you're trying to conceive.
My site:  You Can Get Pregnant Over 40 Naturally (www,getpregnantover40.com)
However, here is a lubricant which is called "ConceivEase" (I'm not paid to promote their product) which was tested by a reproductive endocrinologist and found to be sperm friendly. Read more:

"Most commercial lubricants are toxic to sperm, and couples who want fertility should think about carefully choosing the lubricant they want," said study author Dr. William H. Kutteh, a reproductive endocrinologist at the University of Tennessee, in Memphis.

For the study, Kutteh and his team tested four commercially available lubricants against a new "fertility-friendly" lubricant developed by the researchers.

Their lubricant, called ConceivEase, didn't adversely affect sperm motility, Kutteh said, although the other four lubricants did. The new lubricant, with a patent pending, is made by Reproductive Laboratory Inc. in Memphis. Kutteh is an owner of the company and the product is distributed by Sepal Reproductive Devices in Boston, he said.

Detoxify For Pregnancy And Your Fertility

Pregnancy Over 40, Trying To Get Pregnant With A Fertility Detox

I frequently hear about "detoxification".
See also:  www.getpregnantover40.com for more on natural ways to enhance fertility and pregnancy over 40
To a certain degree, I believe in the concept, however, as this article explains, there may be quite a bit of misinformation out there. Read more:

Tamara MacDonald, a naturopathic physician who practices in Brunswick, thinks that some people aren't able to detoxify chemicals and toxins naturally because their systems aren't working well for one reason or another.
______________

See also   Fertility Detoxification (www.getpregnantover40.com)

______________

Couple this with the daily "assault" of chemicals in the modern world, and it's easy to see why people benefit from detoxification, she says.

MacDonald, who does a supplement-based detoxification once a year with her husband, is wary of poorly researched techniques like foot baths and colonics. She also thinks that people should steer clear of fasting techniques like the popular "Master Cleanse," a 10-day detox plan that consists of nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper.

"One of the worst things that you can do for your body in terms of detoxification is doing a fast," she said. "That was the idea about 20 or 30 years ago, but we know now that your body actually needs specific nutrients to be able to perform its job of detoxification."

Dr. Tanya Edwards, director of the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Integrative Medicine, believes fasting has helped some of her rheumatoid arthritis patients, however, and says she wouldn't rule it out for others, particularly those who overeat.

"Sometimes I'll have patients who come in and they've just abused their bodies and they're gluttonous and they feel like crap," she said. Edwards said many of these patients feel a lot better after two or three days of fasting and a mild herbal laxative like senna, "just to get their systems completely clear."

"Brain fogs clear out, their aches and pains go away, and they feel amazing."

For most patients, Edwards starts with a change in diet - a whole-food diet heavy on the fruits and vegetables, with lots of water and as much fiber as possible.

"Cohesin" May Be The Key To Fertility In Older Eggs

Pregnancy Over 40 and Egg Quality

We all have heard about older eggs and difficulty conceiving, but until now, I've never had an explanation why.
 My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
This article talks about a protein called "cohesin" which seems to be lower in older eggs. Read more:

They have come a step closer to understanding why would-be mothers in their late 30s and early 40s have problems conceiving.

The experts discovered why women above a certain age are more likely to produce abnormal eggs, increasing the risk of infertility, miscarriage and birth defects such as Down’s Syndrome...

...Now researchers at Newcastle University have shed new light on why this happens. The key is declining levels of proteins called cohesins, which are essential for chromosomes to split evenly when cells divide.

See Also: DHEA and Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Fertility expert Dr Marco Gaudoin, welcoming the discovery, said: “This is a potential way of allowing women one day to delay child bearing, knowing that there may be some kind of drug they can take that is going to keep the cohesin levels up.

“Finding a drug to do that is going to be a long way off, but we have gone back to the basic science to show what is going wrong in the first place.”

Dr Mary Herbert, who led the research, said the team used eggs from young and old mice to show that cohesin levels decline gradually as females get older.

Kidman's Grandmother Had Baby At 49

Having A Baby At 49 Is Possible

It's been a number of years since I heard about Nicole Kidman's baby she had with a surrogate - and of course the baby she conceived naturally after miscarriage..
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I don't know why she used a surrogate the second time around, but whatever the reason, I couldn't be more happy for her. One of the interesting things about this article from CNN and People is that she says her grandmother had her last baby at the age of 49! Read more:

The Aussie actress, who presented at Sunday's awards show, announced the latest addition to her family on January 17, three weeks after the little girl was born to a gestational carrier at The Women's Hospital at Centennial Medical Center in Kidman and Urban's adopted hometown of Nashville.

She joins big sister Sunday Rose, 2, and Kidman's kids from her marriage to Tom Cruise, Isabella, 18, and Connor, 15.

More On How "The Secret" Can Help You Get Pregnant

Pregnancy Over 40 and The Secret

I was going through some of the old posts on my blog. Years ago, I did a post on "The Secret" which was all the rage at the time. It was the topic of discussion on numerous talk shows both on TV and radio. I wanted to mention it again here because the video really speaks to one of the key pieces of my success in getting pregnant. "The Secret" is the law of attraction which says that your thoughts, feelings, and resulting actions determine what you attract into your life. The really good thing about living by the law of attraction is that you are no longer a victim of anything including infertility.

See Also: Trying To Conceive, How Vision Boards May Help (www.getpregnantover40.com)

In my book, I talk about how I initially relinquished my ability to get pregnant over to the doctors. This backfired in a big way. As a result of my fertility treatments, I suffered numerous complications, miscarriages and the removal of one of my fallopian tubes. When I finally realized I was in control of my body and my life, things finally started to turn around. I started attracting the right information and I changed my "pregnancy mindset" rather than bombarding my system with powerful and sometimes dangerous fertility drugs. This ultimately led me to visualize success and take the right actions which led to the birth of my daughter (I have since created my CD on Meditation and Visualization (www.getpregnantover40.com).

There's nothing special about me...anyone can do this. I hear from women all the time who go through unsuccessful fertility treatments and wind up getting pregnant on their own. The nice thing about knowing the so called "secret" is that it allows you to take responsibility for what you create in your life rather than feeling like what you get is what "fate" delivered.

You are no different..."the force" is with you too!"

Natural Alternatives For Cosmetics May Help With Fertility

Pregnancy Over 40 and Toxins

So much is absorbed through our skin - it's scary to think about all the cosmetics women put on their face and lotions on their body - especially in dry climates.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
This article tells of a woman in the UK whose fertility was compromised by hormone imbalances. These imbalances were caused in part by all the chemicals in her cosmetics and creams. Read more:

While I was trying to get medical help, I started researching the problem and found a study by the University of Reading that linked the chemicals in everyday beauty products to hormone imbalances - in particular, increased levels of oestrogen, which is a well-known cause of fibroids.

The study also found traces of parabens from beauty products in tissue taken from women with breast cancer.

See Also: Detoxify Your Environment To Get Pregnant (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Thankfully, the use of these substances is being reviewed by the EU. At the time I was stunned, and went to look at the ingredients of the moisturiser I was using.

Stearic acid, glycol stearate, cetyl acetate, methylparaben, propylparaben - I didn't recognise a single one. When I looked up what they were, I discovered that they were a combination of petrochemicals and parabens, preservatives and synthetics - which are forms of poisons and carcinogens (they can accelerate cancer), normally unsafe for consumption and yet what I let my body absorb everyday.
ZITA

Masterchef: Zita found honey, oats and milk make a sumptuous scrub. Brown sugar, salt and olive oil draw out toxins from her skin

I sent a hair sample to a laboratory to test for toxic and hormonal imbalances in my body. It came back confirming my fears.

I remember reading the results - high levels of mercury, oestrogen toxicity and an under-functioning liver with a build-up of the heavy metals that are present in skincare and cosmetics.

That day, I threw out every single chemical-filled cream in my cupboard and went back to basics. I wasn’t even prepared to buy products that claimed to be natural.

The Two Day Method of Pinpointing Fertility

Pregnancy Over 40 and Fertile Days

If you're trying to conceive, it's probably no secret that your cervical mucus is an important factor in monitoring your most fertile time.
 My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
The following article discusses something called the "two day" method which is thought to outperform urinary testing kits. Read more:

Analysing cervical secretion and time to pregnancy data obtained from a large multinational European database - the European Study of Daily Fecundability - they were able to demonstrate that intercourse is unlikely to result in a conception if vaginal dampness is not noticeable on that day or the day before.

See Also: Short Menstrual Cycles and Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

All a woman has to do is to notice when she has any vaginal dampness, not associated with menstruation, intercourse or disease. Women wishing to avoid pregnancy should avoid unprotected intercourse unless they have not had vaginal dampness for 2 days.

This algorithm, which was developed by the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University, is called the TwoDay method. The research teams used their data to analyse the relationship between the presence of noticeable secretions and the daily probabilities of pregnancy in cycles when intercourse was on a given day relative to the identified ovulation day. The TwoDay method differs from other symptom-based natural family planning methods in that it is not necessary to keep detailed records of cervical mucus characteristics and basal body temperature. This simple algorithm may outperform expensive urinary kits, which can miss the majority of the fertile interval that occurs one or more days prior to ovulation.

Is Your Nightlight Making You Infertile?

Guest Post By Kristen Burgess
We live in a day and age where the wonderful electric light illuminates our lives. We can move around safely in the dark of the night thanks to headlights. We can stay up late to read the next great novel. We can get up early to have a quiet moment to ourselves.
But all this light is not exactly natural - and it could have an impact on your fertility. I'm not advocating you give up electric lights. I'm one to keep the lamp burning at night long after the sun goes down just to get a few more paragraphs written (or one more chapter read).

See Also: Short Menstrual Cycles and Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

It is useful to remember how the female cycle used to be regulated, though - I'm sure you've heard it. The moon. That powerful body that lights up our nights, regulates the tides, and smiles down from up high also used to keep track of the menstrual cycle of women.
Women would often have their periods in sync with one another, and in sync with the light of the moon. As the moon reached it's fullest, brightest time of the most light, women ovulated. Just as the moon was ripe and ready, so were the eggs.
So just what does this matter to you today? Well, you can use lighting to your benefit.
I recommend you do change your night lighting situation. But I recommend that you change it while you work on other things. If you have a nutrient deficiency, for instance, you need to correct that. Changing your night light setup isn't going to magically remove an iron or zinc deficiency!
But it can help bring yours cycles into a more regular rhythm, and works especially well in conjunction with changing your diet.
What you want to do is to mimic the natural cycle of the moon in your own bedroom. During the time of your ovulation, you should have light in your bedroom. Begin having a low light on every month when you'd like to ovulate.
Ideally healthy ovulation occurs around days 13 to 15 of your cycle - so that's a good time to leave a lamp on in your bedroom. This is mimicking the light of the moon. If the moon really is going to be full during this time, open up the curtains and let the light spill across your bed.
Sleep in darkness during the rest of the month. Use black-out curtains over the windows. Block light coming in from under the doorway with a towel. You want the room to be very dark. Some women even find it helpful to turn their glowing clocks around!
By copying the natural light of the moon throughout its cycle during your own cycle you train your body to have normal hormonal surges (your hormones are influenced by light). If your cycles have been irregular, or if you've had short luteal phases, night lighting combined with nutrition can really make a difference in balancing your cycles and boosting your fertility.

Getting Pregnant: The Best $.25 I Ever Spent

Pregnancy Over 40, Good Reading

I did a post about this book a while back, but for any of you who didn't see it, here it is again.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Back when I was trying to conceive, I knew then as I know now that I had the power to attract what I wanted in my life, including a baby. I love going to garage sales-- it's a fun way to spend a Friday or Saturday. I especially love going through all the old books.

One day, I came across a book called "The Magic of Believing" by Claude Bristol ( no, I don't get a cut of the sale!) I was immediately drawn to the book, even though the pages were discolored and the cover looked very out of date. I paid my $.25 to the homeowner and I was on my way to some powerful reading.

This book is short and easy to read and I highly recommend it. The message is that you can attract the things you want in your life with the right attitude and thought process. This will help you in all aspects of your life not just getting pregnant.

BALANCE HORMONES WITH CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES

Trying To Get Pregnant Naturally?  Cruciferous Vegetables Can Balance Hormones

I remember when I ran an infertility support group...I had read about cruciferous vegetables and I told everyone that my main fertility treatment was "vegetable therapy".

http://www.getpregnantover40.com

Then I got the whole group eating broccoli every day...and most reported that they lost weight! This article is right up my alley...it talks about fertility foods including cruciferous vegetables.

From the article:

Did you know that eating cruciferous vegetables can help with your estrogen-progesterone ratio? Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage. These vegetables stimulate the body to use estrogen more effectively. Estrogen is important for preparing the uterus to house the fertilized egg each month.

See Also: Foods For Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Cruciferous vegetables also are known for helping to prevent diseases, such as cancer. So what does this mean for getting pregnant? Make sure you include these veggies in your diet. It doesn’t have to be everyday in mass amounts, just make sure that most days of the week, you have a serving (1/2 cup) of these powerful vegetables.
There are many pieces to a fertility friendly diet. Not only are you eating to increase your chances of pregnancy, but also to create an adequate store of vitamins and minerals for when you do become pregnant. The best way to make sure you are on track with your diet is to meet with a Registered Dietitian. Feel free to email me or call CNY Healing Arts to see if this is an option that may work for you. Now, go enjoy a nice big bowl of broccoli!

Italian Fertility Chair

Pregnancy Over 40, Help From Unusual Places

I've written before about the "Ripley's Fertility Statue", but now there is an "Italian Fertility Chair". Who would have thought??
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com

Does "Miracle Chair" Help Fertility?

(CBS) Pews packed for Mass aren't unusual in Naples, but it's what happens after the service that draws so many people to one particular church.

As CBS News correspondent Allen Pizzey reports, worshippers become pilgrims patiently waiting their turn to sit in what's known as "The Miracle Chair."

"A woman told me about this saint," Michaela Mango says, "and we came, and slowly, we started to believe, and then..."

See Also: create your own vision boards (www.getpregnantover40.com)

And then, after three years of infertility, "One month after we came here," Mango's husband, Pietro, says, holding their infant, "the saint put us on the path to have her."

Like many of the hundreds of babies whose birth is celebrated on the walls in the church, that girl was named after the saint. The walls are covered with birth announcements, blue ones for boys and pink for girls, from women who were childless -- until they sat in the chair blessed by the saint.

Male Factor Infertility? Maybe Not

Trying To Have A Baby?  You May Not Be Infertile

I've posted a number of articles about how many couples going through IVF would get pregnant anyway.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Here's another article along those same lines. If you're dealing with male factor infertility, this may be of interest:

From the article:

Thousands of couples may have received infertility treatment when they did not need it, scientists have suggested.
Others may not have got the help they needed to conceive.

Scientists have said the standard measurements used by doctors for decades to assess men's fertility may have been flawed.

Doctors currently use World Health Organisation (WHO) standards to assess how fertile semen samples are.

These recommendations provide a more reliable means for estimating the likelihood of a man's fertility

See Also: Get Pregnant Naturally (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Dr Duane Alexander, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
But US research suggests men whose sperm counts fall below the WHO standards could still conceive a child naturally.

The new measurements suggested by them both raise the threshold for fertility and lower the threshold for infertility - with a "grey" area in the middleM

Pregnancy Over 40. How Old Is Too Old.....Society And The Age Debate

Pregnancy Over 40, Many Women Keep It Private

One thing many women over 40 who are trying to conceive have in common is they seem to be very private about their infertility.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I even knew one woman who was in her mid 40's who I knew from an infertility support group who terminated her housekeeper for coming at unpredictable times before all the "fertility related" documents etc. could be put away.
Everyone is comfortable with different levels of disclosure and sharing information with others, but for me, here are the main reasons I kept my fertility issues under private:

1. The age factor: Society seems to judge "older" women more harshly. Some people view getting pregnant only for the young. Older women who try to have a baby are judged harshly as if there's some kind of cut off point when getting pregnant is no longer acceptable. That's starting to change as many high profile celebrities and women in general are having babies at an older age. The desire to have a baby is just as strong for older women as it is for younger (and sometimes stronger!)

2. Fertility issues involve the most private bodily functions. Getting pregnant is all about egg quality, sperm counts, ovaries, menstrual cycles, etc. It doesn't get more private or personal than that.
3. Trying to get pregnant in private is easier than failing in public: Whether it's getting pregnant or anything else, who needs the public humiliation?

4. Many people think having children over the age of 40 is "selfish" and "self-serving" -that's hard to listen to (as if it's anyone else's business. People think that just because you're over 40, you're going to die before your child reaches adulthood. All I can say is that the average life expectancy for women is almost 80 years old. Older mothers also have a great incentive to keep themselves healthy - and there's some evidence that women who become mothers later in life live longer. So there!

5. Even after my pregnancy was out in the open, I still received comments like: "I can't imagine having a baby at your age" or "why would anyone want to have a baby over 40?" All I can say about that is most of the people making those comments had kids too young in life. They had a hard time struggling with work, finances, etc. What they don't realize is that although having kids late in life is some work, it's mostly fun - you have so much more time and maturity. Because you're a better parent, your child/children are better adjusted, and not constantly acting out to get your attention.

People who negatively judge come from their own set of beliefs and experiences which are totally different from yours. Keeping your information private is certainly a way of avoiding this negative influence into your life. That's one reason why I recommend a support group. Most of the women are a little older and it's a safe place to let it all out.

How The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success Helped Me Conceive

Pregnancy Over 40 With The Help Of Spiritual Laws

A few months before I conceived my daughter, I listened to the tape "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" by Deepak Chopra.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Having the audio was nice because I listened to it over and over again in my car. I tried to live by the seven spiritual laws and perhaps it's not coincidence that I conceived my daughter just a few months after that. One of the best things about this tape/book, is that it gives you some real life day to day things you can do to improve your life and succeed in getting (or attracting) what you want. It also gives some very helpful advice on meditation. Here is a summary of  one of the seven spiritual laws from www.shareguide.com:

See Also: Have A Baby Over 40 With Vision Boards (www.getpregnantover40.com)

 5) The Law of Intention and Desire
This law is based on the fact that energy and information exist everywhere in nature. A flower, a rainbow, a tree, a human body, when broken down to their essential components are energy and information. The whole universe, in its essential nature, is the movement of energy and information. The only difference between you and a tree is the informational and energy content of your respective bodies. You can consciously change the energy and informational content of your own quantum mechanical body, and therefore influence the energy and informational content of your extended body--your environment, your world--and cause things to manifest in it. The quality of intention on the object of attention will orchestrate an infinity of space-time events to bring about the outcome intended, provided one follows the other spiritual laws of success. Intention lays the groundwork for the effortless, spontaneous, frictionless flow of pure potentiality. The only caution is that you use your intent for the benefit of mankind.

Zinc and Folate Together Help Sperm

Men's Fertility Enhanced With Zinc and Folate

My husband has always taken a multivitamin and fortunately, we never had a problem with his sperm count.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
However, according to this article, zinc and folate taken together can have a dramatic positive affect on sperm counts. Read more:

Recent studies indicate zinc supplements along with folic acid may increase sperm count and improve sperm motility in some men.

One published Dutch study claims men who are having difficulty impregnating their partner may increase their sperm count by up to 74% by taking 5mg of folic acid and 66mg of zinc sulfate a day for 26 weeks. It did caution however, that taken alone, there was no significant improvement in sperm count.

Although zinc is an essential mineral required to operate the human body properly, excessive amounts may be harmful, so always consult your physician before beginning any new regimen.

Feng Shui For Conception

Pregnancy Over 40, Try Feng Shui!

I've written before about feng shui for fertility and this article has some new suggestions for what to place in the bedroom and how to arrange furniture.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com

At first, I didn't know if I believed in feng shui, but the more I read about it, it makes sense that energy can be blocked by furniture placement, clutter and so on.  Read more:

Feng Shui to improve fertility luck and help conceive babies

The following Feng Shui tips are meant to help couples who have difficulty conceiving, despite being medically fit in reproductive health.

Poison Arrows afflicting the main door and bed

Look out of your house and check if there’s any ‘poison arrows‘ pointing directly towards your main door. Poison arrows in Feng Shui refers to sharp and pointed structures which inflicts bad chi to the lives of afflicted inhabitants. It can be a sharp angle of a building, edge of a wall, pillars, trees, table corner and such.

See Also: Fertility Detox (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Within your bedroom, observe and find poison arrows pointed towards the bed.

If you find any, both external and internal poison arrows must be shielded, reflected or hidden from view.

If you have any doubts with your own ability to recognise or suppress poison arrows, it is best to use a qualified Feng Shui practitioner for peace of mind.

The bedroom and interior decor

Again, take note of poison arrows pointing towards your bed and hide them from view.

If your bedroom is a mess you should probably give it a good spring cleaning now. Clutter weakens the ‘chi‘ in a given area. Since we’re trying to apply Feng Shui to bring about positive ‘chi’ into the bedroom, clean it up until your bedroom feels comfortable and relaxing to be in. Some feng shui practitioners suggest anything under the bed must not be disturb when couples are trying to conceive until the baby is born.

This is important: Position the bed so that your husband’s head is pointed towards his ‘Nien Yen’ direction, which activates his descendant’s luck. To find out your husband’s ‘Nien Yen‘ direction, you should first find out his KUA number. There are a number of feng shui related websites out there that calculates it for you – Smilingbamboo.com for instance, also has a chart of favourite directions for every individual’s KUA number.

Can Chiropractic Help With Infertility?

Pregnancy Over 40 with Chiropractic

Since I didn't want to rely on paid professionals when I developed my "pregnancy protocol", I did not try chiropractic.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
However, I've attended a few lectures given by chiropractors and their philosophy makes sense. Here is an article about how chiropractic may help with fertility:

From the article:

"The Science Behind the Study
Dr. Frank Painter maintains the Chiropractic and Infertility page for the Chiropractic Resource Organization and operates a practice in LaGrange, Ill. He explains that the roots of the study and the idea behind chiropractic as help for infertility lie in good science.

"Peristaltic motion is a term that describes muscular function controlled by our autonomous nervous system," he says. "If you look at where the uterus is, an egg has to go down a little tube and is propelled via peristaltic motion. If it happens to be fertilized but there is insufficient peristaltic motion, it cannot be delivered to the uterus."

See Also: Acupuncture for Fertility(www.getpregnantover40.com)

Furthermore, Dr. Painter says, in theory, if this peristaltic motion is so disturbed that it backs up and delivers uterine tissue into the abdominal cavity or onto the ovaries, it can result in endometriosis. He knows of at least five studies where women who were close to being surgical candidates because of endometriosis ultimately found relief in chiropractic care.

Dr. Behrendt says that this should almost be intuitive knowledge, simply because of the relationship to the placement of the spine and the placement of the reproductive organs.

"When people come to chiropractors and list their concerns or health histories, we give them fair warning that people under chiropractic care have seen changes in fertility," Dr. Behrendt says. "The nerves to the reproductive system run through the spine, and if there's a distortion, it can affect fertility."

Psychic Predictions Of Pregnancy

Trying To Get Pregnant Might Be Predicted

I remember, back when I was trying to conceive, I called a radio station which had a "psychic" show to get a reading.
 My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
She told me that I was going to get pregnant, and in retrospect, she did describe my daughter quite accurately. Part of me thinks this is hocus pocus, but another part of me believes that we live in parallel universes where some people can see the future. Here is a posting from another blog about a woman who did speak with a psychic when she was trying to conceive:

From the blog:

When I was little I was always amazed with Psychics. I always wanted to get my palm read, or my tarot cards done. I am not sure why this was, but for some reason I liked the idea that someone could tell me my future. As a matter of fact if someone could tell me my future right now in regards to TTC I think I would be a happy woman! So when people on one of my favorite chat boards, www.lifamilies.com, started talking about Brooke the Psychic, I just had to see what all of the fuss was about!

See Also: Create Your Own Vision Boards To Conceive (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Brooke is an online psychic. As most psychics you have to pay for her services, but I found the price to be very minimal, especially for what I was looking for. A one question reading is $12.50. This worked for me because my question for Brooke was when will I conceive. So I paid through paypal. Brooke requests that you ask your question, send in a picture of yourself, as well as give your full name, as well as the full name of anyone else who may be involved in the reading. In my case I gave my picture and name, as well as Captain Awesome’s.

You might think I’m crazy, but with the amount of money I spend on HPT’s, OPK’s, and acupuncture, I figured why not give into my curiosity. And you know what?? I LOVED my reading! It’s probably because the outcome was a positive one, but Brooke really told me everything I wanted to hear.

Women Over 40 Are More Fertile Than They Think!

You Can Get Pregnant Over 40 Naturally

I've written before about how women in their forties may be more fertile than they think.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
The number of surprise pregnancies in women over 40 is similar to that of teenagers. Read this article and there are some comments below it. Some are negative, but there are also some women who wrote in about their surprise pregnancies over 40 (one woman said she was 48 and had a surprise pregnancy the previous year!

From the article:

"Whilst the message about fertility declining with age is an important one, it is often overplayed, alongside disproportionate messaging about unplanned teenage pregnancies," chief executive of the FPA, Julie Bentley, said.

See Also: Yes, I Got Pregnant At 49 (www.getpregnantover40.com)

"It sends an inaccurate message to women and society that only the young fall pregnant and is leading older women to believe their fertility has gone long before it actually has."

Bentley explained that women aged 30 to 34 have the highest fertility rate (113.1 live births per 1000 women in the UK) but that the rate for women over 40 had doubled since 1988, going from 5.1 to 12.6 per 1000 women.

Fertility Treatment: Has Your Doctor Been Brainwashed By The Pharmaceutical Industry?

Pregnancy Over 40, Fertility Over 40, Why Your Doctor May Be Jumping Into Fertility Treatments and Fertility Drugs

Whether we're talking about reproductive endocrinologists or any other type of medical specialty, most doctors have been targeted by the drug companies since they were medical students.
My site:  www.getpregnantover40.com
Many people just expect that if they go to see a doctor, they'll bring home a prescription of some sort. I'm not saying that there aren't some good medications out there that really do save people's lives, but I'm a good example of someone who bombarded my body with fertility drugs, had a number of adverse affects, and went on to succeed with all-natural methods. Here is an article about how doctors may be brainwashed by the drug companies:

"The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that by the third year of medical school, students get, on average, one gift or attend one activity sponsored by a drug company each week. It also found, via a survey sent out to 1,143 third-year medical students at eight medical schools, that:

93.2 percent of the students were asked or required by a physician to attend at least one lunch sponsored by a drug company.

See Also: Detoxify Your Environment If You're Trying To Conceive (www.getpregnantover40.com)

68.8 percent of the students did not think the gifts would influence their practices.

57.7 percent believed the gifts would not affect colleagues' practices.

Students tended to feel that their peers were more likely to be influenced than they were.

80.3 percent of the students believed they were entitled to gifts.

"Basically, we have medical students exposed to marketing. We know the marketing is biased in favor of the products. We know the students don't think they are being influenced. So they're being set up to be influenced without knowing it, and to prescribe in a way that is going to be bad for their patients," Sierles said."

AMH Test May Be Better Than FSH Test

Pregnancy Over 40 and FSH

The FSH test seems to be all the rage in terms of telling women whether or not they will be able to have a baby.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Well, move over FSH...the AMH test may be better. AMH stands for Anti-Mullerian Hormone and it measures egg supply. Read more:

The over-the-counter fertility tests that Steiner studied measure follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which can help predict the timing of menopause and the likelihood of conceiving following fertility treatments, though it’s not clear if FSH levels can forecast natural fertility in the general population. It’s possible that the FSH thresholds for infertility used in the tests need to be adjusted, says Steiner. “So it may be that this test can pinpoint infertility, but we need to uniquely define where that cutoff is going to be,” says Steiner.

See Also: Get Pregnant Naturally With High FSH (www.getpregnantover40.com)

It’s also likely that a more accurate fertility test could be developed to incorporate anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) — which indicates egg supply — instead of FSH. The “sister hormone” to FSH, AMH can’t be detected in the urine; a blood test is the only way and even that has yet to be approved for clinical use...
...In short, it might be better to save your pennies for an AMH test, which some fertility clinics perform — instead of shelling out for a drugstore fertility test.
