Dietary fat is categorized as saturated or unsaturated. Unsaturated fats -- monounsaturated and polyunsaturated -- should be the dominant type of fat in a balanced diet, because they reduce the risk of clogged arteries.

While foods tend to contain a mixture of fats, monounsaturated fat is the primary fat found in:

olive, canola, and sesame oils
nuts, such as almonds, cashews, and pistachios; peanuts and peanut butter

Polyunsaturated fat is prevalent in:

corn, cottonseed, and safflower oils
sunflower seeds and sunflower oil
flaxseed and flaxseed oil
soybeans and soybean oil
tub margarine

The Facts on Omega-3 Fats

When it comes to good-for-you fat, seafood stands out. Seafood harbors omega-3 fats called DHA (docosahexanoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentanoic acid), unsaturated fats considered central to a child's brain development and eyesight, and for heart health.

Omega-3 fats are linked to lower levels of blood triglycerides (fats), reduced risk of clots that block the flow of blood to the heart and brain, and a normal heart beat, among other benefits.

Seafood contains preformed omega-3 fats, the type the body prefers. Adults and children can make DHA and EPA from the essential fat alpha-linolenic acid, found in foods such as walnuts and flax, but experts say less than 10% is actually converted. Fatty, cold-water fish, such as salmon, sardines, and tuna are rich in preformed omega-3s.

Urban Lifestyle May Set You Up For Infertility

I recall working in the corporate world. I didn't actually live in the city, but I commuted there every day and spent most of my time smack dab in the hustle bustle. This is why I decided to quit my job when I got serious about having a baby. When I finally got away from my job, I finally realized how much stress I was really under. "It' would be wrong to assume that people living in rural areas don't face any problems. They do but of a different nature. People living in urban areas tend to live in an organisational setup. There's more of a hierarchy that prevails in the urban social setup. People here tend to build defence mechanisms that don't let themselves be their real self.They live programmed lives constantly swarmed by smartphones, social networking, etc. which makes them impatient, says she adding that these factors lead to stress which in turn leads to physical and emotional problems as well.

Gynaecologist Dr Bela Dodiya points out that an increasing number of people both men and women are suffering from infertility problems in a city like Mumbai. She says, "Lack of exercise and proper healthy diet which are characteristic of an urban lifestyle can lead to a problem like PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) in women. Though hormonal changes are responsible for infertility problems, stress too plays a part in giving rise to infertility problems in both men and women."

What is Prolactin?
Prolactin is a chemical that is secreted by your pituitary gland. This is the pea-sized gland found in the middle of your brain, which is responsible for triggering many of your body's processes. Prolactin is found in both men and women and is released at various times throughout the day and night. Prolactin is generally released in order to stimulate milk production in pregnant women. It also enlarges a woman's mammary glands in order to allow her to prepare for breastfeeding.
Hormones that Affect Prolactin
Like many of your body's other processes, the release of prolactin is actually triggered by other hormones. Hormones affecting prolactin include:
thyroid-producing hormone
Serotonin and thyroid hormone help to increase prolactin release, whereas dopamine works to block prolactin release...

Prolactin inhibits two hormones necessary to your ovulation: follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). Both of these hormones are responsible for helping your eggs to develop and mature in the ovaries, so that they can be released during ovulation. When you have excess prolactin in your bloodstream, ovulation is not triggered, and you will be unable to become pregnant. Prolactin may also affect your menstrual cycle and the regularity of your periods

Have A Baby Over 40, Meditation and Visualization Can Help

I did use visualization and meditation when I was trying to conceive and I believe that it was a key piece of my success. In my CD on Meditation and Visualization (www.getpregnantover40.com) I go through the steps I took to attract a baby into my life. Here are some suggestions on what to visualize. You can create your own imagery in your mind, but this may be a place to get started:

Gerald Epstein, M.D. suggests the following visualization in his book ‘Healing Visualizations,’ to help women overcome infertility.

Close your eyes, breathe out three times and imagine walking into a beautiful garden. There you find a tree and a stream of flowing water. Bathe in the water, allowing it to enter and clean all ova, or eggs. Then sit under the tree and enjoy the sunshine and blue sky reflecting through the leaves. Look up to your right and make a prayer for what you want. Do this quickly. Then ask your mate to join you in the garden. Lie down under the tree holding hands. Picture a blue light forming a dome over you. Now go out of the garden holding hands, cradling a child between you.

Do this imagery for two to three minutes once a day for seven days, beginning at the middle of your cycle.

Emotional stress can lower the level of fertility. For example, stress in a woman can affect the hormones being released from the brain's pituitary gland, interrupting ovulation (the release of mature eggs). If the stress is combined with another "fertility-lowering" condition, such as a partially blocked fallopian tubes, then it can lead to infertility.
One proof that mind/body medicine is an effective part of infertility treatment is a University of Massachusetts study that showed that infertile couples who joined support groups were more than twice as likely to conceive children compared to couples who didn't participate in any groups.

Pregnancy Over 40, Ovulation Is Key To Get Pregnant

In addition to incorporating Dr. Price's principles into their diets, many women with irregular cycles have benefitted from addressing their night-lighting situation. Exposure to light at night can inhibit the pineal gland's production of melatonin. The pineal gland directs your body's rhythmic activities--including sleep, appetite, and the onset of puberty--through its production of melatonin. This hormone is primarily secreted at night, and it requires darkness to be produced. Bright light suppresses melatonin secretion.2


The hypothalamus gland, also located in the brain, is richly supplied with melatonin receptors. This gland regulates your body's overall homeostasis, including things like blood pressure, emotions, temperature, and the endocrine (hormonal) system. Hormones secreted by the hypothalamus stimulate the anterior pituitary gland to secrete its hormones; and these, in turn, stimulate the thyroid gland, the adrenals and the ovaries to secrete yet other hormones. The ovaries (and the testicles) are also thought to contain melatonin receptors.3

You can see how melatonin production--and thereby sleeping in darkness or with light--can affect the whole body's functioning, including the menstrual cycle: if the hypothalamus doesn't receive sufficient melatonin, its ability to regulate the hormonal system will be impaired...

...Other clinical researchers have also found that sleeping in the absence of light (introducing it for a few days each cycle, or sleeping only in the absence of light) can help women in a variety of situations to strengthen their cycles.6,7

Women with anovulatory cycles have become ovulatory.
Women with unclear mucus readings develop discernible, healthy mucus build-up.
Cycles that had been very short (26 days or less) or very long (35 days or more) become 27-31 days long.
FSH levels become healthy.
Spotting at various times during the cycle is significantly reduced.
Progesterone levels are strengthened.
Women with a history of miscarriage are able to sustain pregnancy.
Premenopausal women develop a more discernible mucus pattern; and the intensity of their premenopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, sleeplessness, and mood changes are reduced.

SNL Actress Rachel Dratch - Surprise Pregnancy At 44

A funny thing happened to “Saturday Night Live” cutup Rachel Dratch on her way to middle age: She got pregnant at 44!

“Total shocker,” the Lexington homegal told the Track. “I had kind of written off the whole kid thing and then I got this surprise. Because, you know, everything you hear tells you it can’t happen.”

So Dratch, who will always be known in these parts as the female half of “Saturday Night Live” Red Sox [team stats]-crazed couple Sully and Denise, did the one thing she is really good at: She wrote about it in a hilarious new book, “Girl Walks Into a Bar ...”

“When everything goes according to plan, there’s really nothing funny about that,” she said. “And I thought the whole surprise of this would make a good story.”

Pregnancy Over 40, Risks Not So Bad

Finally, a member of the medical community who doesn't take the gloom and doom approach to older motherhood.  Before the days of birth control, women had babies well into their 40's and some even in their 50's!  Dr. Nicolaides had a grandmother who had a child at 53 and he seems encouraging to older women having babies. Professor Nicolaides, whose own grandmother had a child at 53, takes a refreshingly positive – if unconventional – view. ''The risks of late motherhood are completely exaggerated,'' he says, sweeping me into his handsome, wood-panelled office, where spotlit shelves are lined with his collection of ancient Greek pottery. ''There's an increased risk of Down's syndrome but the vast majority of women have normal babies at 40 and completely normal pregnancies.''

He attributes the late motherhood trend to women going ''into the professions'' and becoming intolerant and short-fused. ''You become stroppy like me!'' he says, eyes twinkling merrily (Nicolaides is divorced with two children). ''You develop your own routines and you don't tolerate fools!"

For those older women even-tempered enough to pursue both work and motherhood, the challenge is not necessarily carrying their pregnancy to full term, or even the birth itself, it's getting pregnant in the first place. Many never make it to Professor Nicolaides's clinic.

Instead, they visit Zita West, who runs a private fertility clinic that combines Western medicine with complementary therapies. ''I'm seen as a last-chance saloon,'' she says. ''Most of these women have been told there's no hope. They arrive at my clinic in floods of tears.''

West, a warm-hearted mother of two who trained as a midwife and acupuncturist, believes that the negative voices of authority can become dangerously self-fulfilling. ''Although I have a medical background, I feel the news that's delivered to women is quite brutal,'' she says. ''Having a baby is a deep burning desire for many women. And if you're told that your ovaries are withered and geriatric, it has a huge impact. Yet women age biologically at different rates. Some women over 40 may have the ovarian age of women of 35 and a 35-year-old may be more fertile than a woman 10 years younger.''

West, who has helped clients as old as 44 conceive naturally, believes that the approach to fertility is often over medicalised and fails to examine the whole picture, whether it's emotional health, diet, stress levels or exercise. ''Having sex naturally works better than IVF for women in their forties,'' she says. ''And I'm a great believer in the body/mind connection. Wherever you put your energy, things start to happen.''
