Treating POF or Premature Ovarian Failure, FSH and More

The more research I do on Traditional Chinese Medicine, the more I realize how many more options women have aside from pharmaceutically driven western medicine.

See also: www.getpregnantover40.com for more on dealing with high FSH and Traditional Chinese Medicine/Alternative medicine

Here is an article about how premature ovarian failure may be treated in natural ways. Read more:
From the article:

We view the condition of POF as a failure of communication: messages from the brain just aren't getting to the ovaries, and they cease their performance. As a result, the whole system increases its (Yang) energy to try to evoke a response from the ovaries, producing a frenetic cycle of stimulation with no effect. The result is depletion of Yin and deficiency Heat. Most POF cases we have treated have presented with a severe Kidney Yin deficiency, usually accompanied by (Liver or Heart) Blood deficiency, and Spleen Qi deficiency accompanied by deficient heat. It also is not unusual to see concurrent Kidney Yang deficiency.

A typical treatment will consist of the following recommendations.

Dietary modifications from the Spleen-fortifying diet, avoiding wheat, refined carbohydrates, sugars, dairy, and most animal products. It's also wise to avoid hot, spicy foods if signs of internal heat are present. We want to calm the body down to make it less reactive. Dietary insults can set off aggravations in autoimmune conditions.

Take herbs to fortify the spleen like Astragalus; herbs to nourish Yin and Blood like the formulas Liu Wei Di Huang Wan or Si Wu Tang, or the individual herbs Rehmannia, Angelica, White Peony, and Ophiopogon; and herbs to resolve Blood stasis and obstruction, like Persica, Moutan, and Red Peony.

We stimulate the acupressure points to regulate the Penetrating (Chong) and Conception (Ren) meridians, and to supplement Yin and Blood. We employ techniques to improve blood flow to the pelvic organs and open up communication to the brain and pituitary gland.

Pregnant After Adoption - Stress or Medical Mystery?

Stress may be a factor in why couples may not conceive. I guess it's the old chicken and egg dilemma, which came first? Did stress cause the infertility or did infertility cause the stress? I guess maybe both could be going on, but people do conceive naturally after infertility and adoption...maybe it's because they let go of the stress - this video explains the connection.

How Antioxidants In Your Diet Can Help You Conceive

Here's an incentive to eat healthy again.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com for my entire series on foods for fertility and foods high in antioxidants
I've written before about how antioxidants may boost fertility and reduce the risk of miscarriage. Here's another article that discusses the research in this area.

Three recent studies
In a recent study, researchers did what is called a meta-analysis of 23 other studies to see if they could identify any benefits from the use of antioxidants in infertile men. They found that the levels of protective antioxidants were lower in male subjects who were unable to achieve fertilisation, compared to control subjects who were not infertile.

In addition, the levels of reactive oxygen species (harmful products of oxidative stress) were directly linked to infertility.

In a second study, 30 men who were part of couples that had been diagnosed as infertile were treated with placebo (dummy treatment) or astaxanthin (a carotenoid with very powerful antioxidant properties) for 3 months.

After 3 months of treatment with astaxanthin, the pregnancy rates increased from 10% in the infertile controls who received no antioxidants to approximately 55% in the previously infertile couples where the male partner received antioxidant treatment.

Finally, a study among women who suffered from endometriosis (a condition linked to female infertility) found that those women who had lower reactive oxygen species levels and higher levels of protective antioxidants were much more likely to fall pregnant.

The role of antioxidants in conception
The reproductive process in men (i.e. the production of millions of sperm cells) and women (i.e. the production of an egg cell) involves a great deal of oxidative energy which in turn generates high levels of reactive oxygen species (which can be likened to harmful 'waste products').

To combat the potentially harmful effects of the reactive oxygen species, the bodies of human males and females use a number of antioxidant defence systems, namely vitamins A, C, E, coenzyme Q10, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase (vitamins and enzymes).

In view of this and the benefits obtained in veterinary medicine with antioxidants, it would seem logical that human infertility may also be linked to low levels of antioxidants and that supplementing with antioxidants could improve fertility.

The authors of the Arbor Nutrition Updates (2007) also did a literature search to identify studies using antioxidant supplements. They found 28 such studies, representing more than 1700 subjects. Most of the studies were concerned with male infertility and sperm health.

It’s encouraging that up to 75% of these studies found that supplementing with antioxidants improved fertility.

Start Parenting Before Conception

I like the concept of communicating and preparing for your baby before they are even conceived. I believe I did this in my own way by talking to my daughter and telling her I was ready when she was ready to make her journey down to me (as I talk about in my meditation and visualization CD). This is an interesting site which has links to many similar stories:

From the article:

some parents today are being startled by encounters with babies before they have been conceived. These parents are drawn into very early parenting by vivid dreams, visions, and appearances that come weeks, months, or even years in advance of physical conception. Prepared for it or not, their perspective on parenthood becomes distinctly spiritual. Members of APPPAH have written about these encounters. When I first read their work, I was reminded of when I first read Raymond Moody's now-famous little book, Life After Life (1995), which quietly introduced the revolutionary concept of the "near-death experience." This book began sweeping the world, based on only fifty in-depth interviews with people who had had the near-death experience.

The remarkable book by Elisabeth Hallett, Soul Trek: Meeting Our Children on the Way to Birth (Hamilton, MT: Light Hearts Publishing, 1995), contains nine years of research collecting anecdotal reports from 180 persons who told about visitations, inner voices, subtle "knowings," and other types of contact with their babies prior to conception. One baby successfully pressed his mother not to have an abortion, saying "Mommy, I'll be a good boy, please keep me." These engaging and powerful contacts, imbued with purpose and intelligence, have made a profound impression on those visited. Showing up in spiritual form, the future babies have brought reassurance, conveyed love, announced, persuaded, offered guidance, and otherwise sought to prepare mothers (some of whom were not yet even married) for their future coming. In a case dramatized on television, the future child contacted the mother, father, and a sibling, independently appearing, disappearing, and returning to them (Sightings, 1997). Elizabeth's book is packed with stories which exceed the boundaries of the materialist paradigm. You can read some of these stories on our website at Life Before Birth: Communication Before Conception-A Spiritual Frontier.

Feng Shui and Male Fertility

Feng Shui and Male Fertility

Guest Post By Kartar Diamond

In past articles and in my books, I have written about some Feng Shui circumstances which can affect fertility, with the assumption and emphasis on the woman's role. However, there are some things a man can do to increase his own fertility. In the East-West School of Feng Shui, each person has good and bad personal directions based on their personal Kua. This is also called a Personal Trigram and it is based on your year of birth. In The Feng Shui Matrix, I give a run down of what each of the eight basic directions means for each personal trigram. What might be a positive direction for one person could be negative for another. One general principle is that for a woman, if she sleeps with her head pointing to her personal trigram direction, it is considered supportive for conception. The personal trigram direction is always associated with relaxation. So it is interesting to see that in this system it is considered easier for a woman to conceive if she is sleeping in her most relaxing direction. For example, a woman born in 1983 is the Dui trigram which is associated with west. If she sleeps with her head to west, this can be one of a half dozen different techniques to help increase the prospects of getting pregnant.

For a man, it is totally different. Each person, male and female, has a personal direction that is considered the best for attracting prosperity. And for a man, sleeping with his head toward his major prosperity direction also makes him more fertile. When I learned this, I found it odd and amusing that for a man to produce offspring is part of the concept of being wealthy. We know for a fact that men who father many children are not necessarily wealthy in reality, but the children themselves are considered manifestations of a different type of prosperity. I knew one very successful businessman who beamed when he was telling everyone about the coming of his fourth child. And he actually said that he had no financial worries because he felt that he had became more successful with each child. Having an attitude like that certainly helps!

If you are a man who wants to know what your combination Major Prosperity/Fertility Sleeping Direction is, I have created a list in this article. It should be noted that for the Personal Trigram Birth Charts, the first day of any given year for the Chinese Solar Calendar begins on February 4th, and not on January 1st. For example, if a man was born in January or February 1st, 2nd, 3rd, in any given year, he is actually a year older on the Trigram calendar. February 4th is the mid-way point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, so it should not be confused with the Chinese Lunar Calendar which vacillates by weeks from year to year.

A man born in January of 1957 for example, would be considered born in 1956. Or a man born on February 3rd of 1961 would be considered born in 1960.

These Personal Trigrams repeat every nine years perpetually and the sleeping direction refers to the direction ones head is pointing when laying down.

Dietary Mutagens Affect Fertility

I have never come across the term "dietary mutagen" until reading this article. Apparently, some food additives and food preparation can cause genetic damage to the egg and sperm Click through on the link below on what to do or avoid:

From the article:

Mutagens are substances and pollutants that you may be exposed to every day. These substances do damage on the genetic levels (sperm, egg, and embryo). Caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, recreational drugs, medical drugs, dietary mutagens, and environmental hazzards, are what you should look out for. Also check out other misc. things to avoid.
