Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor Receives High Marks

Clear Blue Easy Accurate For Predicting Ovulation

First, let me say I'm not being paid to promote this company.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I have used The Clear Blue Easy product because it was recommended by the fertility clinic I went to way back when I was doing inseminations. However, I also found this article which cites some positive pregnancy statistics for women who used this product.

From the article:

Accurately pinpointing the fertile period and timing intercourse accordingly are critical when trying to get pregnant. Healthy couples only have a 25% chance of conceiving each month(1) and it takes on average 6-18 months to get pregnant(2). But new research proves that one at-home fertility predictor in particular can significantly improve the odds of a quicker conception.

The study has shown that use of the Clearblue(R) Easy Fertility Monitor can dramatically increase a woman's chance of conception over two cycles of use(3). The results of this controlled study are being published in the February issue of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's publication Fertility & Sterility. Clearblue Easy is manufactured and marketed by Inverness Medical Innovations, Inc.

I'm sure that other brands on the market can be used successfully as well if you decide to go this route. I did not use ovulation predictors when I got pregnant naturally since I was so good at predicting my own ovulation - but if you're having trouble figuring it out, this may be a good option.

Men's Fertility: Do This Daily

Daily Intercourse For Men's Fertility and Sperm Quality

Well, wouldn't you know it - more contradictory information. I can't tell you how many articles I've read (and posted) about how couples should have intercourse every other day to help a man build up his sperm to conceive.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Hold that thought...it might be better every day. Read more:

Daily Sex May Help Men's Fertility (www.webmd.com)

From the article:

For the study, all of the men were asked to ejaculate daily for seven consecutive days. Afterward, they provided more sperm samples, which showed that 81% of the men had a reduction in DNA sperm damage.

That may be because the sperm spent less time in the male reproductive system, Greening writes.

Half Of IVF Procedures Unnecessary Says Fertility Pioneer

Pregnancy Over 40 Naturally, Don't Get Pushed Into IVF

When an industry "insider" goes out of his way to blow the whistle, I listen.
This article with a link to a CBS Early Show clip features Dr. Sami David who says half of the expensive and sometimes dangerous IVF procedures done out there are unnecessary. Click through on this link to view the video:

CBS) A pioneer of in vitro fertilization says the procedure is being overused, and that nearly half of all procedures are unnecessary.

In his new book, "Making Babies: A Proven 3-Month Program for Maximum Fertility", Dr. Sami David takes the billion-dollar business to task.

Dr. David stopped by The Early Show to explain

"The IVF team has gone amok as far as I'm concerned, all right? There are countless women who are going through IVF unnecessarily. They don't realize they're treatable causes for their infertility. They're not having a deep enough evaluation in many cases," he explained.

Asked why he thinks doctors seem to go straight to IVF, rather than doing the detective work, Dr. David said, "Some could be lack of knowledge or lack of interest. They have a product to sell, and they sell IVF. Sometimes it's just the impatience of the patient or impatience of the doctor."

IVF Abnormalities - Part I

 IVF Over 40, Chromosome Abnormalities

I've mentioned before that one reason we decided to discontinue fertility treatments (aside from the exorbitant amount of money we spent and the physical problems I encountered) was that I had read how some babies born through IVF had physical abnormalities.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Now, in all fairness, most babies born through IVF are normal and I know plenty of women who wouldn't have kids without IVF. Some couples, depending on their diagnosis have no choice but to go through IVF to get pregnant. However, I do believe people should be informed about some of the research that has been done on babies born through IVF. This week I'm going to do a series of articles on that subject. Here is an article about possible chromosomal problems in twins born through IVF:

Chromosome Worries For Twins Conceived Through IVF (www.aphroditewomenshealth.com)

From the article"

But the news wasn't so good for couples conceiving twins via ART. It seems that a woman who is 38 (the average age of the study participants) who has a singleton pregnancy conceived spontaneously has a 1 in 60 chance of having a child with a chromosomal disorder, but if she has a twin pregnancy, that rate jumps to 1 in 34.

"Previous studies suggested that there was an increased incidence of chromosomal disorders in twins. There was also controversy whether there was an increased risk of genetic abnormalities in pregnancies conceived through IVF. We wanted to determine if both factors were independent risk factors and if there was an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities among twin gestations conceived through IVF," Pisarska explains. "We wanted to see if IVF treatment adds to the rate of chromosomal abnormalities in twins, and we found that it did. However, age was an important factor. Even though the age difference in the women who conceived with the help of IVF compared to those who conceived spontaneously was not very large - 39 versus 37 - it was significant enough to say that age may be a contributing factor. We need to look at this further."

Supporting the Fertility Challenged Couple

Trying To Conceive Over 40, Couples Don't Want Advice

I could certainly relate the this article (below). One of the reasons we kept our struggle with infertility private is because I didn't want unsolicited advice.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
However, after I was hospitalized with an ectopic pregnancy, most of our families found out. Yes, after that, we heard many of the things mentioned in this article. I've come to the conclusion that most people are well-meaning, however, they may need to be educated on what to say and when to say it. Perhaps you should have them read the following:

Supporting A Fertility Challenged Couple (www.grandparents.com)

From the article:

DON'T: Blab to all your friends. "This is very precious information. It's not to be put up on the flagpole," says Adrienne.

DO: Explain that your help, financial or otherwise, comes without strings. Some couples decline much-needed financial assistance because they worry their parents will feel entitled to know every detail of the treatment or influence decisions. "Put the offer out there on the table and let the couple feel like they have the control to decide," says Covington.

DON'T: Offer unsolicited advice. Says Adrienne: "Avoid running in the door saying, 'I spoke to my friend. She said Dr. So-and-so is the best.'" Rather try: "I'm sure you're doing everything in your power to find the best doctor, and I'm here if you need me.'"

DON'T: Shield the couple from news of other people's pregnancies. They'll find out anyway, says Covington, "and the idea of trying to protect them becomes punitive, making the couple feel they're at fault or to blame." Just be sure to share the announcements in a kind and sensitive manner. At the same time, be understanding if the infertile couple decides not to attend child-centered gatherings.

DO: Spend as much time with your fertility-challenged child as you do with
your other children. "You don't want your child to think, 'They're always going to my sister's place because she has children,'" says Adrienne. "Create a space where your child can feel special. Do something that removes the pressure, like going to the movies."

DON'T: Pressure your child. "My parents sometimes make me feel like I must not be doing enough," says Viner. "I wish they would acknowledge that this isn't solely about effort. A lot of it is luck."

More On Infant Outcomes with IVF and Other Fertility Treatments

IVF May Raise Birth Defects

I've written about IVF outcomes before and here is another article about how the risk of birth defects may be higher with fertility therapies.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I should say that the overall risk is still quite low, however, it never hurts to know everything you can about how fertility treatments may affect your pregnancy and future baby. Read more:

Fertility therapies slightly raise odds of defects
Major Canadian study quantifies small but significant increase in risks (MSNBC)

From the article:

"The biggest difference was seen in the rate of gastrointestinal problems, such as defects in the abdominal wall or organs not in the right place. Babies conceived through reproductive technology were nearly nine times more likely to have such problems — one in 200 births versus six per 10,000 for the others.

However, “it’s still pretty uncommon,” said lead researcher Darine El-Chaar of the University of Ottawa.

The chance of cardiovascular defects was more than twice as high — 90 per 10,000 babies conceived through ART versus 40 among those conceived naturally. Defects like malformed limbs also were slightly more common, but not facial defects like cleft palate or problems like spina bifida."

Alternative Medicine and Fertility

See also the Fertility Shop for more on Fertility Bodywork

Trying To Get Pregnant Over 40 With Alternative Medicine

I found a great site which discusses a number of treatments for fertility which fall under the "alternative medicine" category.
The article discusses everything from massage, accupuncture, fertility retreats, yoga, and much more. I can't say I tried everything mentioned on this site, but it looks like a great resource:

From the above site:

Opening the Door to Fertility

Scan the stacks at your local library, and you’ll find shelves bowed with books on how to get pregnant. From the looks of it, one of our most primal functions—the creation of new life—seems a terribly complicated task. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it has become for the 6.1 million women and their partners currently struggling with infertility. In their desperation to conceive, many people find themselves navigating the conventional fertility path with all its confusing twists, turns, and dead ends: beginning with invasive tests, progressing to harsh fertility drugs with countless side effects, and culminating with in vitro fertilization if all else fails.

For the most extreme cases of infertility, those in which one or both of the partners have medical issues preventing pregnancy, that path—bumps and all—might actually be the only way to get pregnant. But holistic physicians like Joel Evans, MD, OB/GYN, author of The Whole Pregnancy Handbook, find that people too often resort to drastic treatment before ever giving their innate fertility a chance to prove itself. According to Evans, “60 to 70 percent of illnesses are lifestyle related. So it would make sense to treat lifestyle issues or do lifestyle interventions, and then use medicine for the problems that are left.”

Our special section aims to shift the dialogue about infertility, so we focus on each person as an innately fertile being, who needs help manifesting this fertility, not as someone suffering from an acute dysfunction. Some approaches we explore are new and some are tried-and-true, but all of them will support your mind, body, and spirit as you find your path to parenthood.

Perimenopause and FSH - Much Confusion

I frequently hear the term "perimenopause" which literally means "around the time of menopause".
Women in their 40's wonder, "Am I in perimenopause?". Well, I guess it's a matter of how you define it.
Before I conceived my daughter, I had many signs that I was in perimenopause. It just goes to show you that there's no point in labeling yourself. Our bodies are not static. Although I don't know how high my FSH was when I conceived (the only time I had it tested was 5 years before I conceived my daughter), many women have successful pregnancies even with high FSH.  Click Here To Read Full Article:

"...perimenopause is not a static thing. We move in and out of it depending on our hormonal balance. Women will find that they can be a little bit menopausal now and then, flowing in and out of it for 10 or more years."

How Hypnosis Can Help Fertility

Pregnancy Over 40 With Hypnosis

You may think hypnosis for infertility is far fetched, but if you believe in the mind-body connection, it makes sense that your body is going to respond to your subconscious beliefs.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
Hypnosis can help bring those beliefs in line with having a baby. Read more:

From the article:

The function of hypnotherapy is to relax the person and address subconscious barriers to conception. Everyone understands that stress can cause skin rashes, headaches, and even heart attacks. If the body is under stress, the sympathehetic nervous system prepares us for fight or flight, which is totally imcompatible with preparation for reproduction.

However, it is more complicated than this. The reasons why a woman may shut down (not ovulate, or not prepare a suitable uterine lining to maintain a pregnancy) may have much more to do with factors from many years ago-messages she received and believed about her own fertility or perhaps fitness to be a mother. Messages like “all the women in my family have difficulty conceiving” can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. We are not a brain with a body attached. Every cell responds to the messages which we believe to be true. Many of them are detrimental, but because they operate at a subconscious level, they can only be addressed at a subconscious level. A woman who has had a miscarriage or abortion or has given a baby up for adoption, or has undergone other sorts of trauma, may have difficulty conceiving because emotional healing has not yet occured.

On average, a women wih a diagnosis of infertily has a 24% chance of pregancy after IVF . When this method is supplemented by hypnotherapy, acupuncture, Reiki, or other body- mind methods (preferably in combination) the stats rise to 45-65 % take-home babies.

Relaxation Breathing and Meditation For Fertility

Meditation For Fertility - Pregnancy Over 40

I found a great site which gives a number of meditations which may help you conceive. Although their technique is a little different from the one I use in my meditation and visualization CD, you may find it helpful:

From the site:

Relaxation breathing is a very easy way to learn the practice of meditation and visualization. This may take some time, but once you feel how relaxed and at peace you can be, you will not be able to go without meditating a little every day. Fertility meditation and visualization practice through relaxation breathing should become your daily bread and butter if you want to achieve conception faster and it will help especially if you are going through in vitro cycles.
Fertility meditation

Meditating helps your mind become in tune with your body. When your mind is at ease, not wondering around or overwhelmed by worrying thoughts, your body receives messages of wellness and healing can occur.

The time of meditation through relaxation breathing is the time you allow for yourself to heal, to balance, to rejuvenate. Try the following meditations and you will feel more at ease with yourself, your world, and your life.

Miscarriage Risk Triples With Stenuous Exercise

Pregnancy Over 40, Trying To Conceive?  Go Easy On Exercise

I have always suspected that too much exercise will not only affect your ability to get pregnant, but also your ability to stay pregnant (especially in early pregnancy).
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
I actually address this in my book that it just makes logical sense that if your body is bouncing around with high impact exercise, it would be harder for an embryo to "take hold" and implant the way it should.  When I was undergoing fertility treatments, my doctor said I had to lay around for at least 7 days after the embryo transfer since their success rates were higher in women who didn't  move around much after the procedure.

So many sources basically dismiss any association between exercise and miscarriage (I even had on PA in my OB's office tell me that I could run a marathon after getting pregnant and it probably wouldn't make a difference....I don't think so!). However, this article talks about a study that was done on exercise in early pregnancy and how it does seem to increase the risk of miscarriage:

Strenuous Exercise During Early Pregnancy Triples the Risk of Miscarriage

From the article:

After collecting the data about the participants, the researchers compared women who did not take any exercise at all with those who exercised more than seven hours a week or played “high-impact” sports, such as ball games and racket sports.

It was found that women who played "high-impact" sports or who exercised for more than seven hours a week were approximately three-and-a-half times more likely to miscarry.

The researchers also found that miscarriage was far rarer later in pregnancy, and that the association between exercise and miscarriage disappeared after the 18-week mark.

"The results of this study suggest that leisure time exercise during pregnancy, and particularly high-impact exercise, is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage in the early stage of pregnancy," the BBC quoted the authors of the study as writing in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

However, the study has also shown that swimming, which is one of the most popular exercises among pregnant women, does not increase the risk of miscarriage.

Pregnancy Over 40 - Vitex (Chasteberry) Increase LH

Although herbal remedies were not a big part of my pregnancy protocol, I did drink Chasteberry tea.
Here is an article about how it can enhance fertility and it talks about a study done and the results:

Vitex (Chasteberry) and Fertility

From the article:

Chaste tree berry acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) production and mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The result is a shift in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, in favor of progesterone. The ability of chaste tree berry to raise progesterone levels in the body is an indirect effect, so the herb itself is not a hormone....

Get Pregnant Naturally With Only One Tube

Wow, this is encouraging if any of you have lost a fallopian tube due to an ectopic. According to this question answer article, the chances of conception may be as high as women with both tubes over time. If you've visited my website , you know that I conceived multiple times over the age of 40 with only one tube.  Additionally, my mother had an ectopic pregnancy and had three children afterward.
Having only one fallopian tube will make it less likely to get pregnant in the short term, but as time goes on and there are more ovulations on the side where your remaining tube is, your chances of conception increase—ultimately to the same pregnancy rates as women with both tubes.

Your biggest risk is that whatever made you prone to the first ectopic pregnancy may also be present in your remaining tube (old infection, scarring, etc.). Check with your healthcare provider about the condition of your remaining fallopian tube.

Get Pregnant Over 40 With Beans!

So many people are afraid to eat beans.
It's a shame, because there are ways to reduce the embarrassing side affects of eating these nutrition packed, fertility enhancing wonder foods.

There are products like "Beano" out there which can eliminate the digestive backlash that may come with eating beans (and no, they didn't pay me to say that). I use the liquid version and I take a little more than the recommended amount, but it works. I frequently make a big pot of bean soup (you can throw in absolutely any vegetable you have on hand - carrots, celery, onion, garlic, broccoli, potato, etc.) and if you want some ham to give it a little more taste, that's fine too. Start with dried beans (very inexpensive),soak the beans overnight, rinse, then throw them in the pot with the vegetables and cook for a few hours (soaking and rinsing the beans also helps to eliminate much of the gas). I freeze the soup in individual containers for a quick lunch.

I ate lots of beans when I was trying to conceive. They're good, filling, and healthy in almost every way. Black beans are loaded with antioxidants

Having Twins Can Affect Their Fertility

This article is a little scary since the incidence of fraternal twins has risen sharply since the advent of fertility treatments.
See: www.getpregnantover40.com for natural pregnancy over 40
Just off the top of my head, I know of five sets of fraternal boy-girl twins. Apparently the mixture of male and female hormones in utero may affect the female child's future fertility. Read more:

Dr Virpi Lummaa and colleagues from the University´s Department of Animal and Plant Sciences used Finnish church records spanning 1734 to 1888 as part of their research. Of 754 twins from five distinct Finnish populations in the records, females who survived to adulthood were 25% less likely to have children if their twin was a male. Those who did have offspring gave birth, on average, to two fewer babies than women who had a twin sister. Women who had a male twin were also 15% less likely to get married.

The researchers believe that this is due to a number of factors. Firstly, females exposed to a male twin can have masculine traits, attitudes and behaviours, therefore affecting their decision to get married or a male´s attractiveness towards them. Secondly, exposure to elevated levels of testosterone during development can promote the onset of diseases that compromise fertility, such as reproductive cancers.

Fertility Cycle Beads

Getting Pregnant Over 40:  Help With Tracking Ovulation

When I was trying to conceive, I had my trusty "period calendar" (which I kept for years)

My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
However, there were days I would forget to look at it. Even though people use calendars on their smart phone,  here is a nice visual alternative called "Cycle Beads". It's a necklace that helps you track how close you are to ovulation. Read more:

From the article:

How do Cycle Beads Work?
Cycle Beads represent your menstrual cycle and function as a tactile ovulation calendar. Each bead stands for a single day. On the first day of your period, you simply place the rubber ring on the red bead (representing cycle day 1). On each following day, simply move the rubber ring ahead by one bead (an arrow reminds you which direction). As you move through your cycle days, when the ring is on a dark or red bead, fertility is low and your odds of conceiving are less. However, once the ring moves to a white bead - typically cycle day 8 through 19 - you know that you are nearing ovulation or perhaps already ovulating. While the ring is on a white cycle bead, you are at peak fertility and your chances of becoming pregnant are high!

Cycle Beads offer an easy method to increase your odds of conceiving (as well as provide a natural, safe method of family planning). Proven effective, Cycle Beads provide an unambiguous visual method for tracking your ovulatory cycle and identifying the fertile days when conceiving is likely (as well as the infertile days when achieving pregnancy is less probable). Moreover, Cycle Beads are based on a natural family planning practice that has been shown to be over 95% effective!

Fertility From The Chinese Medicine Viewpoint

Get Pregnant Naturally With Chinese Medicine and Philosopy

I incorporated quite a bit of Chinese medicine and philosophy in my "getting pregnant protocol" when I was trying to conceive.

My site: www.getpregnantover40.com

Here is a good article for anyone interested in the Chinese medicine perspective on fertility.  Some of the information you may have seen before, and some of it may be new.

Dr. Maoshing talks about everything from seasonal timing, to eating "live" foods with life giving energy, sleep, and essential fatty acids.

Read more:

Secrets of FertilityPosted by Dr. Maoshing Ni

From the article:

Live Food Gives New Life
Mother nature has given us foods that naturally enhance fertility. The medical tradition of China - renowned as the most populous country in the world - has long considered certain foods to be of particular value in increasing success with fertility.

These foods that contain the potential for new life include eggs, nuts, seeds, beans, legumes, and berries. Since these foods are themselves capable of propagation when hatched or sprouted, they are said to be abundant in life-giving energy.

Getting Pregnant Over 40: Frequency of Intercourse For Conception

Pregnancy Over 40, Frequency of Intercourse

So many couples are so anxious to conceive that they treat getting pregnant like a "job" and actually may be having too much intercourse.

My site:  www.getpregnantover40.com

According to the article below, every 48 hours may be best or 2-3 times per week  (assuming you're near the time of ovulation).  Now I should day that there are other articles that recommend daily sex.  I've often said that if you look hard enough, you can find conflicting information to anything!

Daily Intercourse Could Help Male Fertility and semen

The theory behind daily sex is that frequent sex reduces the length of time sperm are exposed to toxins inside the man’s testicles.  When the sperm ejaculated out of the man’s body every day, damaged sperm are removed.  This could reduce the amount of semen, however that may not be a problem for most men.

So, you will have to be your own judge on whether to have daily intercourse or 2-3 times per week.  Sometimes, the stress of "having to have sex" makes 2-3 times per week more reasonable

Read more:

From the article:

Sex Frequency

Fertility experts say that regular conception sex, two to three times a week is what it takes for a healthy couple to conceive. Having sex at this frequency means that a woman whose reproductive system is functioning normally is likely to have live sperm inside her while she is ovulating. At the time of ovulation itself, sex once a day is recommended.

How Much Is Too Much?

According to the experts, if both the man and the woman are in excellent reproductive health, there is no such thing as too much conception sex (providing both parties have the energy). It's worth bearing in mind that overdoing it at the beginning of your attempts to get pregnant might make you feel less like having regular sex later on, which could be counterproductive.
There are circumstances in which it's possible for a couple with fertility problems to have too much sex. For example, a man with a low sperm count runs the risk of lowering that sperm count further if he ejaculates more than a two to three times a week. You should speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.

Fluoride and Fertility

Getting Pregnant Naturally:  Fluoride May Alter Hormones

During the time I was trying to conceive and while I was pregnant, I drank bottled water since I had read that, in some areas, tap water, depending on the source can contain harmful toxins.  Some of these toxins include lead, nitrates, and even fluoride,  could be harmful.

My site: www.getpregnantover40.com

Fluoride may be good for your teeth, but there may also be negative affects on your thyroid and reproductive hormones.  But also, keep in mind that bottled water is usually packaged in plastic which could be a problem as well.

Here is another article about how water with fluoride added can also be harmful. Read more:

Why We Changed Our Minds About Water Fluoridation (thyroid.about.com)

Here is an important passage of the article:

"With fluoride added to city water, many millions of people are deliberately exposed to a hormone-altering agent. There is certainly now a massive epidemic of low thyroid, low adrenal, and low functioning sex glands. Many people rightly complain, “There must be something wrong with my hormones.”

Massage Therapy For Infertility

Getting pregnant over 40 can be hindered by pelvic adhesions

Sometimes, we can have small adhesions in our pelvic area which can block fallopian tubes or slow them down.  Our pelvic region can also become congested if we sit at a desk all day or if we wear tight clothes and even high heeled shoes.

I've written before about something called the "Wurn" technique which can help with female fertility problems. I found an article from massagetherapy.com which explains more about the Wurn technique and the benefits of massage therapy if you're trying to conceive. Also, my DVD, "Fertility Bodywork" has a segment on self pelvic massage. Read more:

From the article:

Soft-tissue Massage
About 12 years ago, massage therapist Larry Wurn and his wife Belinda, a physical therapist, came across an alternative treatment for female infertility related to mechanical problems. While treating an infertile woman for low-back and pelvic pain, the therapists discovered their client became pregnant, after seven years of infertility. What made it especially interesting was the client had been diagnosed with two blocked fallopian tubes and had been sexually active the entire time. Intrigued, the massage therapists tried the same technique on eight other infertile women. Half of them became pregnant following the massage therapy.

Wurn's treatment combines physical therapy with site-specific massage. They were encouraged by an early success rate of 50 percent treating female infertility with the process, according to Belinda Wurn. That rate has now climbed to more than 70 percent. "One of our latest cases was infertile for four years," says Wurn. "She came to us with two blocked fallopian tubes and one failed IVF. She had suffered two miscarriages, an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy and a failed attempt to open her tubes surgically, when she came for the therapy. She became pregnant after one week of therapy here and is due to deliver next week.

Is Pregnancy Over 40 Possible After Embolization For Fibroids?

Pregnancy Over 40 After Fibroids

When I was in my early 30's (long before I was married or wanted children), I had major abdominal surgery to remove some fibroids that were growing quite fast.  I was actually considered quite young to have a problem which happened to have started when I was in my 20's.

My site: www.getpregnantover40.com

I had fibroids removed by a fertility doctor because maybe I would want to get pregnant one day

Interestingly, I went to a fertility doctor just because I thought he might be the most progressive in terms of possible treatments.  I guess I also had in the back of my mind that maybe I might want to get pregnant one day.  As it turns out, I wound up having major abdominal surgery to remove my fibroids.  Apparently, at the time, laser technology had not progessed far enough to have a scope with laser removal.

Uterine artery embolization for fibroids is less invasive, but women wanting to get pregnant should weigh all the options

Nowadays, there is a somewhat new procedure called uterine artery embolization. However, if you want to get pregnant this procedure isn't always recommended.

My site: http://www.getpregnantover40.com

Here is a study that gives the pregnancy results of women who had previously undergone uterine embolization:

American Journal Of Obstetrics and Gynecology

From the article:

Objective: This study was undertaken to evaluate the incidence and outcome of pregnancies after
uterine artery embolization (UAE) for symptomatic uterine fibroids.
Study design: A retrospective analysis of all pregnancies after UAE by a single interventional
Results: Fifty-six completed pregnancies were identified in approximately 1200 women after
UAE. One hundred eight patients were attempting to become pregnant and 33 of these became
pregnant. Thirty-three (58.9%) of the 56 pregnancies had successful outcomes. Six (18.2%) of
these were premature. Seventeen (30.4%) pregnancies miscarried. There were 3 terminations, 2
stillbirths, and 1 ectopic pregnancy. Of the 33 deliveries, 24 (72.7%) were delivered by cesarean
section. There were 13 elective sections and the indication for 9 was fibroids. There were 6 cases
of postpartum hemorrhage (18.2%).
Conclusion: Compared with the general obstetric population, there is a significant increase in
delivery by cesarean section and an increase in preterm delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, miscarriage,
and lower pregnancy rates. When taking into account the demographics of the study population,
these results can be partly explained. There were no other obstetric risk identified.

How Allergies and Gastrointestinal Disorders Affect Fertility:

From the article:

Gastrointestinal Diseases and Allergies and their role in Fertility:

Gut flora imbalances can be very important for achieving optimal fertility. The gut flora can affect hormone availability as the gut flora metabolizes hormones like a second liver (the liver is the most important organ for processing hormones.) If you don’t have healthy gut flora, you can waste a lot of money on supplements and food. The goal is to get as much detoxification and purification as possible to make your body as healthy as it can be so you can produce eggs and sperm that will, in turn, create healthy and happy babies.

Food allergies need to be addressed individually and managed. I often see that the safest thing to do for most diseases if to follow the Eat for Your Type program. This works for most of the population in that it eliminates most of the foods that irritate the body causing the body to respond with all kinds of allergic symptoms.

Celiac Disease is linked to malabsorption, recurrent miscarriage, premature menopause, lowered fertility and reduced semen quality because the body is not absorbing the nutrients it needs to maintain healthy tissues.

Wheat and Dairy sensitivities are linked to endometriosis. In endometriosis, the uterine tissue thickens and is covered by very thick mucous which prevents embryos from implanting.

The Great Lie About Fertility In The 40's

                                                                               Picture:  dailymail.co.uk
Miracle: A month after being told that she had no chance of becoming pregnant by doctors Deborah discovered she was pregnant and gave birth to her son this year

My Website:  You Can Get Pregnant Over 40 Naturally (getpregnantover40.com)

I frequently post articles about women who conceive not only in their 40's, but in their mid to upper 40's.  This article titled "IVF and the great lie about fertility and the over-40s..."from the Daily Mail in the UK couldn't have said it better...there is this "great lie" going on about how "infertile" women in their 40's are.  People run to fertility clinics without giving their bodies time to get ready to conceive.
This article talks about a number of women who conceived and had a baby well into their 40's:
From the article:

When I did meet a man and he asked if I wanted a baby, I laughed. Surely he knew I was far too old?  Then, at 45, my periods stopped. Assuming I had reached the menopause, I carried on with daily life, irritated that I was putting on weight.
It wasn’t until someone commented on my new cleavage that it occurred to me to take a pregnancy test. I had been so brainwashed into believing that I was too old for motherhood that I had not used contraception. I took four home pregnancy tests — all positive — before I made an appointment to see my GP.
Despite a trouble-free pregnancy, I could sense a feeling of caution whenever I went for a scan or a check-up, as if my pregnancy were a freak accident that was bound to end in tears. In fact my daughter, Deia, was born healthy and well in May 2004. And it seems my experience certainly isn’t unusual.

1/4 Of Couples Failing IVF Conceive Spontaneously

If you've tried and failed at IVF like I did, it may not be the end of the story.   This study found that 24% of couples who fail IVF conceive naturally and 17% of couples who get pregnant with IVF conceive another child naturally.  It goes to show that the diagnosis of "infertility" isn't always accurate.  Read more:

From the article:

To get a better sense of how frequently people going through IVF end up having babies without extra help, Troude and her colleagues collected information on about 2,100 couples who had begun fertility treatment in France in the early 2000s.
About 1,300 of those couples successfully ended up having a baby through IVF.
Eight to 10 years later, the couples responded to a survey about whether they'd had a child on their own following fertility treatment.
Among the parents who'd had a baby through IVF, 17 percent later had another child without assistance. And among couples who originally failed to have a baby with fertility treatment, 24 percent went on to have one from a spontaneous pregnancy...

...Troude said unexplained infertility could be a good sign for couples' chances of having a baby, compared to those who have a clear reason for not initially getting pregnant.
Evers said the findings "reassure (couples) that it is not the end not to conceive by IVF, especially not if they have unexplained infertility."
Another recent study found that among couples who hadn't been able to get pregnant after a year or more of trying, 44 percent of those who opted against fertility treatment still ended up having a baby eventually (see Reuters Health story of February 2, 2012).

15 Facts About Sperm

Here is an interesting and fun article about all the things you may not know about sperm. I learned a few new things from reading this article by Craig Niederberger and CBS news:

Craig Niederberger MD

From the article:

Sperm vs. Semen

Some people use the terms sperm and semen interchangeably. But sperm cells are only one component. Semen also contains substances from the prostate and a pair of rabbit ear-shaped organs inside the pelvis called the seminal vesicles.

Sperm cells - which are made in the testicles - need lots of high-octane fuel to whip their tails. Lucky for them (and us), sperm get the fuel they need in the form of sugar fructose, which is supplied by the seminal vesicles.

Fluid from the prostate contains chemicals that cause semen to liquefy once it's inside the female. Without it, sperm would be locked in place and unable to swim.

Mentally Control Your Fertility

Mind-Body Fertility

The mind/body connection is sort of at the root of everything I believe about physical health, fertility, and just about everything else.  This is one reason I did meditation and visualization when I was trying to conceive (learn more about my meditation CD here: MEDITATION AND VISUALIZATION CD )

Fertility Food Plan From the UK

I've written countless articles about what to eat when you're trying to conceive. This article from the Mirror (UK) talks about what men and women should be eating. Most of these food are no surprise, but they do address the reason why some foods should be eaten. Read more:

From the article:

A Spanish study recently found that men could boost their sperm counts by eating less red meat and fatty food, and more fruit and veg.

Meanwhile, research at Harvard University also found that women who made dietary changes reduced their risk of infertility by as much as 80%.

“The food choices you and your partner make can have a major effect on improving fertility,” agrees fertility expert Dr Zita West, whose client list includes actresses Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett and Davina McCall.
Here are the foods you – and your partner – need to eat...

How to do it
The first step to better fertility is to ensure you have a balanced diet and don’t cut out any major food groups.
“Make sure you both get adequate protein from lean meat and fish, essential fats from fish, nuts and seeds, wholemeal carbohydrates and lots fruit and veg,” says Zita.
Once you have the basics right you can then add the specific superfoods that researchers have found can boost egg and sperm production.
But be patient: you will both need to stick to a diet plan for at least three months before you will know if it has had any effect.
Here’s what should be eating...

Have A Baby Over 40 With Onions!

I love to cook with onions, I practically add them to almost every recipe.
Chopping up raw onions in a salad can also be a great way to get them in your diet. If you're worried about your breath, try brushing your teeth and tongue with baking soda after eating them. Onions have many healing properties and can help resolve issues that lead to infertility.

So what are the benefits of eating onions for your fertility?
  • For men, onions are supposed to increase testosterone production, they are also high in antioxidants which protects sperm from damage.  Onions are reported to increase sperm number, percentage of viability and sperm motion
  • Onions enhance libido
  • Onion cleanse the liver, kidneys and blood. Sulphur rich foods like garlic and onions can help to detoxify heavy metals from the body
  • Onions can fight insulin resistance which is especially important for women with PCOS

Could Mercury Levels Affect Fertility or Response To Treatments?

Mercury In Fish - A Problem In Pregnancy

I think we've all heard about the danger in eating fish in pregnancy because of the mercury levels.
 My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
This article talks about a celebrity wife who had extremely high mercury levels because of her love of fish. Interestingly, her levels dropped with a change in her diet. Read more:

From the article:

Rod, 65, and Penny, 39, said they tried for two years to give son Alastair a brother or sister but turned to IVF after fertility experts said they could not conceive naturally. Model Penny was told her mercury levels were "off the scale" as a result of her love of fish.

So she cut seafood out and after a third IVF cycle their dreams came true.

Penny said: "After two months' detox my mercury levels fell by half, which is scary - I had no idea what fish had been doing to my body."

Study Finds Sperm Improves With Good Vitamins C, E, Folate, Zinc

Most of us have always known that good nutrition is important for both men and women who are trying to conceive.  This study proves that some key antioxidants and nutrients actually do protect and improve sperm health, namely, C, E, Folate and Zinc.  Read more:

From the article:

Each volunteer's intake of a micronutrient was classified as low, moderate, or high based on how they compared to other participants. The median daily intake, both from diet and supplements, was 162 milligrams for vitamin C, 23.7 milligrams for vitamin E, 2,586 micrograms for β-carotene, 475 grams for folate, and 12.3 milligrams for zinc. Many participants, even those who reported to be healthy, consumed much less than the recommended dietary allowance for many of the micronutrients...

...The scientists analyzed the data several ways and came up with the same result each time: A diet high in antioxidants and micronutrients may decrease the risk of producing sperm with DNA damage, especially in older men.

You Can Lower FSH

Here is an amazing article about a woman who had high FSH and was told that doing IVF would be a waste of time. She underwent some treatments of reflexology and her FSH went from 25 down to 8. Although the fertility community may be skeptical of this treatment, the woman in the article is convinced that her reflexology treatments made the difference. If you're interested, I address how you can perform reflexology on yourself in my DVD, Fertility Bodywork.

Read more:

Doctors had told them Mrs Chapman had a hormone problem which meant fertility treatment would be a waste of time.

But the 40- year-old mother remembered she had read somewhere that reflexology could help with infertility.

With nothing to lose, she had three months of foot massage and, at the end of her course, was delighted to hear that her hormone levels had returned to normal.

She soon became pregnant and gave birth to second son Fraser five months ago. While doctors insist there is nothing to prove the alternative therapy was responsible, she is sure it worked.

SEE ALSO: GET PREGNANT WITH HIGH FSH (getpregnantover40.com)

Mrs Chapman, who also has a four-year-old son called Jake, said: 'I am convinced I wouldn't have become pregnant without the reflexologist's help. I was absolutely shocked, but obviously delighted, to find I was pregnant after being told we couldn't have a second child. It's a dream come true.'

Mrs Chapman, from Deepcar, Sheffield, said she was 'devastated' to be told she would never conceive again.

'I was told that there was no point in attempting IVF treatment because it would be a waste so I would have to resign myself to the fact that we couldn't have another baby,' she added. A hormone test - which indicates if a woman is entering the menopause - showed levels were too high, suggesting her ovaries had stopped producing enough oestrogen, which controls the reproductive cycle.

To become pregnant, a woman needs a hormone rating of ten or below but Mrs Chapman's was above 25. Following reflexology, however, it dropped to below eight.

' I told the doctors about the reflexology but they dismissed it and just said it was possible that hormone levels can drop when you become more relaxed and less anxious.

'The effect of the reflexology was amazing. It seemed to relax me so much. I became pregnant quite quickly and everything went smoothly. The doctors never admitted that the reflexology had anything to do with it but I have no doubt at all.'

Fertility Drugs - Dangerous in Higher Doses

I could totally relate to the following article.  This woman had hyperstimulation of her ovaries after being given higher doses of fertility drugs.  I also had that condition and it's painful and uncomfortable.  It can also be life threatening if not treated.  The woman mentioned in this article had to be hospitalized for her condition and, like me, decided enough was enough.  Read more:

From the article:

It was my first time doing IVF, and I’ll never do it again,” said Ms. Demidon, 28, a quality assurance specialist in Cayuga, N.Y. “It was awful. When you have that much fluid in you, it puts pressure on everything.”
OHSS is a little-known complication of fertility treatments that rely on high doses of hormones, which are standard in the United States and the United Kingdom; the syndrome is not the only health problem to be linked to in vitro fertilization. Fertility clinics in Europe and Japan have turned to a safer, low-dose form of IVF, but clinics here have largely resisted on the grounds that the success rates for low-dose IVF are not as high...

... And experts have debated for decades whether IVF contributes to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer; studies have reached conflicting conclusions.
Lupron, used to suppress the ovaries, has raised concerns as well. The drug is approved to treat prostate cancer; its use in IVF is off-label (meaning it is not FDA-approved for this purpose). Thousands of women have reported adverse reactions, including memory loss, liver disorders, bone loss and severe muscle, joint and bone pain, said Marcy Darnovsky, associate executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society, a public interest group in Berkeley, Calif.
“Lots of drugs are used off-label, but is this use appropriate?” said Ms. Darnovsky. “Considering the number of women who’ve taken these drugs over the past 25 years, you’d think much more rigorous studies and analysis would have been done on them.”

PCOS may be helped by cinnamon

I've heard that cinnamon can be a great tool in trying to control insulin resistence.  It can also be a natural way to deal with PCOS which is a common underlying cause of infertility.  Here is an article in its entirety about cinnamon for PCOS:

Common Kitchen Spice May Help Control PCOS and Improve Fertility

Guest Post By John Miley

Are you trying to get pregnant and have PCOS? if so, you must know about this simple kitchen spice. If you have PCOS, you know it can signal other health issues if not controlled - health issues such as pre-diabetes, diabetes, thyroid problems and more.
Furthermore, it can make getting pregnant very difficult for some women, and nearly impossible for others.
Don't despair, there are some things you can do (before you go on a pharmaceutical drug) to regulate PCOS.
Stable blood sugar and insulin levels has a positive effect on PCOS. Eating complex carbohydrates, grass-fed proteins and vegetables is a helpful step in managing PCOS as is the addition of this simple kitchen spice:
If you are interested in including a spice that can help stabilize blood sugar, consider using cinnamon daily (1 Tablespoon) mixed into your daily diet. You can try taking a teaspoon of cinnamon before meals, or drink it as a tea 30 minutes before you eat.
Properties in cinnamon help regulate blood sugar and can moderate the insulin response your body has toward blood glucose--and when your insulin is regulated, PCOS tends to improve
Other helpful considerations you can use to regulate and control PCOS naturally:
-Eat plenty of antioxidant rich foods (blueberries, greens, red and orange veggies) as they fight inflammation that can worsen PCOS.
-Relieve stress. Go on long walks. Get out the fresh air and move your body. Exercise is a great help in regulating PCOS.
-Try acupuncture and acupressure. Studies conducted in Europe suggest that 33% of the women with PCOS treated with acupucture noticed restored and normal ovulation.
-Balance your blood glucose (blood sugar) and insulin with a diet rich in omega-3 proteins, plant-based low in complex carbohydrates. You can even experiment with eliminating grains altogether to see how your PCOS responds to this change.
These tips can get you pointed in the right direction, so give them a try. Small changes in your daily lifestyle choices can often yield big results.
