WOMAN, 54 PREGNANT NATURALLY

Yes, Women Over 50 Get Pregnant Naturally

Wow, I'm certainly not amazed when I hear about women in their 40's getting pregnant naturally, but women in their mid fifties?
Now that's something! Here is an article about an Italian woman who got pregnant naturally at 54!

From the article:

54-year-old Italian woman has amazed doctors and herself by falling pregnant naturally.

Hospital worker Giovanni Ciardi is one of only a handful of women to have become pregnant without medical treatment in their 50s.

Doctors have described her as an 'exceptional case'.

Mrs Ciardi is 15 weeks pregnant. She is due to give birth to a girl in November - by which time she will be 55 years old.

She already has a 23-year-old daughter called Veronica through her first marriage.

Mrs Ciardi lives with her shipyard worker partner Bruno Paoli in Camaiore near Lucca in the Tuscany region.

Mrs Ciardi said: 'Back in January I missed a period and I thought well my menopause must have arrived but when I began to feel nausea and have an upset tummy I went to the doctor.

'He just smiled and said: "Your symptoms have nothing to do with the menopause - you're pregnant."

ICSI May Pass On Fertility Problems To Next Generation

Pregnancy Over 40:  ICSI and It's Safety For Your Baby

I do know a few couples who used ICSI to overcome male factor infertility.
My site: www.getpregnantover40.com
However, this article talks about the scary reality that this procedure may actually cause the next generation to suffer from the same male factor problem. Read more:

From the article:

However some experts have concerns about the treatment. Since it overcomes the barrier of male infertility, there are fears that genetic defects which would normally prevent conception might be allowed into the embryo.

An Australian study published in The Lancet medical journal two years ago suggested that ICSI increased the risk of delayed mental development in one-year-olds. This conflicted with other evidence showing no sign of slowed mental development by the age of two.

The first ICSI pregnancies 18 years ago were achieved by a Belgian team led by Professor Andre Van Steirteghem from the University of Brussels.

Speaking at a major science conference in the US, he said he believed ICSI was being used too often.

Prof Van Steirteghem told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Diego, California: "I have noticed from the beginning that several clinics use ICSI for everyone.

"I don't think it's necessary when you have methods like conventional IVF which is certainly less invasive, and can help couples with female factor or idiopathic (no known cause) infertility when the sperm count is normal. I don't see any reason why ICSI should be used in these situations.

Ever Heard Of Hypnofertility?

Pregnancy Over 40, Help Yourself Conceive With Hypnosis

I found an article about something called "hypnofertility". As I read through it, it sounded much like the visualization that I did while I was trying to conceive.

Hypno-Fertility
A Natural Way To Get Pregnant

From the article:

"How Does It Work?

Hypno-Fertility is a form of hypnotherapy, or guided visualisation whilst in a relaxed state. The practitioner may ask you to visualise sperm and egg meeting, or holding a baby in your arms. Several sessions will be done, all positively suggesting how natural it is for you to get pregnant and all the joys of motherhood you have to look forward to. Each session would last between 1 and 2 hours.

These hypnotherapy sessions are sometimes done in conjunction with nutritionalist advice and accupuncture to open blocked energy points.

This technique can double the success rate of IVF and increase conception rates by up to 55%!"

IVF Mistakes Nearly Double

I was actually involve in a lab mix up when I underwent IUI. After waiting 2 hours in the waiting room, the doctor finally called me in and told me that there was a lab mix up and my procedure would be cancelled. Who knows where my husbands sperm went? I can only hope it didn't wind up in another woman. Here is an article about how these errors have more than doubled recently. Read more:

news.bbc.co.uk

From the article:

he Human Fertilisation and Embryology Association (HFEA) - the IVF regulatory body - said reported incidents rose from 182 in 2007/8 to 334 in 2008/9.

The HFEA said that represented below 1% of more than 50,000 cycles carried out.

Incidents range from technical failures to serious mix-ups including the wrong sperm being put with the wrong egg.

One woman told the Donal MacIntyre Show her last remaining embryos went missing during treatment.

Clare, who did not wish to give her surname, told the programme: "I was sat there, gowned up, waiting to go in and have a transfer.

The key failure of the HFEA is that when they ask clinics to put in special procedures they're not enforcing them
Dr Sammy Lee, University College London

"They said you've got one embryo remaining, the other two embryos have gone missing.

"They said in the next sentence I can assure you they haven't gone into anyone else."

"Those were two potential babies," said Clare, and the only explanation the clinic could offer was that they must have "slipped off the straw" during the freezing process.

The clinic involved, IVF Wales at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, says its success rate in recovering embryos is among the highest in the world and all incidents are reported to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).

The same clinic was responsible three years ago for a serious incident in which a couple's last viable embryo was implanted in another woman. An investigation showed serious failings at the clinic.

'Deeply disturbing'

Guy Forster, from Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, said Clare's was a familiar story.

In the past 12 months he said he has dealt with a dozen couples involved in similar incidents at different clinics around the country.
